 I chose to talk about the subject of Racism for my Sociology project. In the article Race (human categorization) it discusses how physical traits differentiate from person to person. It also states that the word "race" is becoming more problematic as time proceeds. Another article, Racism in the United States begins to discuss slaves and how Native Americans did not receive the same rights as White Americans. The article Racism talks about the Holocaust and how many people died and were killed brutally just based on their race. Institutional racism, talks about how forms of racism can be expressed of social and political institutions. Finally the article Anti-racism discusses how beliefs, actions, movements, and policies adopted or developed to oppose racism and how differently they are viewed within a certain society.

Hi Alyssa! This is your instructor Sarah. So, it looks like you might have misunderstood the project. You look on Wikipedia pages for information about five topics. But, for this project, you are supposed to find a Wikipedia stub or topic that you want to write about, and find 5 outside (non Wikipedia) sources to cite. Preferably, you want to start on the ECC library website we discussed in class. Please contact me if you have questions so I can help you get caught up with this! Final Article

The topic of racism has had an effect on man kind for as long as anyone can remember and is still a problem in society today. Racism has always had an impact on society in the past as well as the present day. Hopefully as time goes on and the future proceeds, this problem will hopefully be resolved. According to the article "Is Racism on the rise? More in U.S. say it's a 'big problem'" by Catherine E. Shoichet (http://www.cnn.com/2015/11/24/us/racism-problem-cnn-kff-poll/), discusses how polls are used to average out how much racism actually takes place during the years. According to a poll they have done about how big of a problem racism is in our society today, the poll revealed that 49% of people say that racism is a major problem in society today and the lowest of 7% believe it is not a problem at all. Another poll the surveyors reveled was in the year 1995 41% of people believe that racism was a problem in society and in the year 2011 the percentage actually dropped to 28%. However in the year of 2015 the poll raised back up to 49%. What this poll is reveling is not much progress being made when it comes to racism and how much it affects our society. Another article entitled "Americans say racism is a bigger problem today than at any other point in the past 20 years" by Christopher Ingraham (https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/wonk/wp/2015/08/05/americans-say-racism-is-a-bigger-problem-today-than-at-any-point-in-the-past-20-years/ talks about how 50% of people today say that is it still a major problem in our society. The article then goes on to explain that 73% of blacks call it a big problem, compared to 44% of whites. Also, Democrats estimated about 61% are also more likely to see a major problem than Republicans which stands roughly about 41%. Back in 2010 only about 17% of Republicans called racism a "big problem" in society. An article entitled "Racism is poisoning our society" by Sharon E. Watkins, (http://time.com/3843203/racism-is-poisoning-our-society/) discusses how she herself posted a prayer in the response to the events that happened in Baltimore where a black man was incredibly injured while in police custody while the protests afterwards became very violent. Watkins explains how people don't even realize that they're being racist and then when they are told that they are being racist they deny it or just simply ignore it. The author goes on to explain that more African American people (more boys and men) are gunned down by the police even though they are unarmed with stops of minor violations. Another article entitled "America has a big race problem" by Jeff Nesbit (https://www.usnews.com/news/articles/2016-03-28/america-has-a-big-race-problem) discuss how black teenaged men are shot and killed by white police officers when the policeman have no evidence whether they have the right to pull out their weapon or not. They simply do not want plausible cause to pull out their weapon and shoot but they proceed to do it anyways causing an outbreak in protests such as "Black Lives Matter". Nesbit also goes on to discuss how 60% of White Americans believe that African Americans are less intelligent than whites. Some people even say that blacks are more lazy then whites. Another article entitled "Why is racism still a problem in America?" by Terry Nicquel (http://www.app.com/story/news/2015/11/24/why-racism-still-problem-america/76309790/) talks about how black men are still dying after encounters with white police officers whether it'd be caught on camera or being there in person. People see these things happening and obviously want to record it to have proof that this kind of things still happens to black men even though they are unarmed. Another man who commented on his article states that "we may need two or three more generations to change viewings on racism". The CNN poll that Nicquel talks about says that according to those polls, people are aware that racism is still going on today. According to these articles racism is still a major factor and impactor on our society today.
