M101 OT2015-1

[edit]

M101 OT2015-1 (also known as PSN J14021678+5426205) is a contact binary that merged into a single star, in a process known as a luminous red nova. M101 OT2015-1 it is a optical transient, located in the Pinwheel Galaxy. Luminous red novae are representatives of the sparsely populated class of exploding variables which is known since 1988 when such a star exploded in the M 31 galaxy.[1]

Discovery

[edit]

M101 OT2015-1 was discovered independently in February 10, 2015 by Dumitru Ciprian Vîntdevară from Planetarium and Astronomical Observatory of the Museum Vasile Parvan in Barlad, Romania[2][3]. The LRN in M 101 has emerged in the spiral galaxy in the region of the OB-star association and is a massive system, the bright component of which leaves the main sequence of the Color Magnitude diagram toward the red side. Over 11 years prior to the outburst, the brightness of the system gradually increased. As the brightness increase before the outburst takes place when the components move closer and the common envelope forms, we identify this event with the merger of the components in the massive system. The star had an unusual light curve with two peaks of luminosity. The star was discovered in the second outburst that followed three months after the first maximum, in which it attained the visual absolute magnitude -12.75. In the second outburst maximum, the star spectrum was classified as ∼K2 I and in three months it evolved with the temperature decrease to ∼M2 I. The weak TiO molecular bands can be seen in the M2 I spectrum. The spectral development is characteristic for red novae and leaves no doubt about the classification.[4]
