improvisation section

Hi,

Thanks. I still did not see any changes to the "melodic" reference in the top section. Can you discuss my suggestion with some knowledgeable carnatic musician and incorporate it?

Also, I do not believe that the four things listed in "improvisation" section captures all of the improvisation in carnatic music. Here is my take on it:

Sangatis are different musical ways of rendering a line. Many songs come with sangathis (one or more) that a composer intended, but there are also several new sangathis that a performer can add. [There are also versions of a song that have entirely different sangatis, FYI]. Given that it is a free improvisation opportunity and many carnatic musicians DO improvise, it is important to mention it there.

The other one which was totally missed is "virutham". This is also a free form of improvisation, setting verses to music, without accompanying percussion.

You are welcome to verify these statements (or modify it appropriately) based on your discussion with the best carnatic musicians.

I still don't quite follow why you disagree with the melodic part - can you explain in detail on my talk page please (this would be http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User_talk:Ncmvocalist here)?

Sangathis are primarily learnt not as improvisation. This is more of an artists discretion, and you'll find that sangathis aren't so frequently self-created on the spot, in the same way an alapana, nereval, swaras or thanam is created. These 4 forms of improvisation are almost ALWAYS created in this way - sangathis aren't so frequently created in the same way, and if they are, it's so minor. Please keep in mind people learn compositions differently and this can't be attributed to improvisation - it's improvisation when a particular artist sings the same composition with different sangathis within a sufficent time period. So this would not warrant to be under this category in my view.

Viruthams is a contentious issue - some artists fully create it on the spot, but some don't, but I would ok including them in this area - if, there are verifiable references.
