Peer Review Summary for Margaux Appel (Group 1-Judith Butler)
Since the article that Margaux is translating is written in French, and all of her suggestions are written in French, it was difficult for me to review her specific edits. However, I could compare the French and American wikipedia pages, and point out differences and suggestions based on the English Judith Butler page. In addition, I could look at sources and content of the sections of the English page corresponding to the sections that Margaux decided to edit on the French page.
I began by comparing the layout of the French Judith Butler Wikipedia page with the English page. I noticed that the two pages differed in their arrangement, structure, formatting, and sources. Both pages begin with an introducing, followed by an Early life/biographical section. From there, the English page is organized by proceeding with an overview of Butler’s major works, reception, political activism, personal life, selected honors and awards, and lastly a timeline of publications. The reference section is quite extensive with 92 sources and many of them coming from academic outlets. In comparison, the French Judith Butler page has a completely different arrangement of content. After the Intro and Biography Sections, this article deviates from the English page with a Feminism and Gender section, then Judaism and politics section, Comments on Books section, and finally a section on Publications. I noticed the English page listed 21 book publication by Judith Butler, as well as 13 book chapters (and this is only a partial list of Butler's publications). In contrast, the French Judith Butler page has only 14 publications listed, all of which are books, and none of the publications that are chapters on the English page are listed on the French page. I would suggest adding to the Publications section on the French page. The French page also has a much lower number of sources, 31 citations, compared to the English page at 92 citations.
Next, I looked at the Introduction part of the French Judith Butler page that Margaux decided to edit and re-phrase because the French wording does not sound professional. I was concerned because there is not a single citation for this entire section, which is important for an introduction to establish credibility. The majority of this section discusses the main themes of Butler’s work, so I would suggest citing the books containing these themes, and the Britannica page on Judith Butler contains some of these ideas as well and may be used as a source for the introduction: (https://www.britannica.com/biography/Judith-Butler)
When looking at the content of the original French page’s introduction, I have a few suggestions. I think information about Butler’s foundational work in queer theory could be added to the French intro, as well as her work on the role that action and speech have in constructing/forming gender. Also, the French introduction only very briefly mentions Butler’s involvement in contemporary political issues, so I think it could expand on her support of the LGBTQ movement and critique of Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
The French page’s section Bibliographie is the only section that comments on Butler’s early life and education. Many aspects of her education and background that are mentioned on the English page are skipped on the French page completely. Some information that could be added to the the Bibliographie section include that she attended a Hebrew school when she was young, her undergraduate journey, and her fullbright year at at Heidelberg University. In addition, Butler has taught at many schools besides Berkeley, none of which are mentioned in this section. Also, the reference of the Russell Palestine Tribunal at the end of this section seems out of place.
Lastly, Margaux edited the phrasing on the section on Gender Trouble. I noticed that the entire section only contained 2 sources, one of which had a broken link and could not be accessed, and the other appeared to be from a personal website and I’m not sure how credible it is. I would be cautious that the information is not backed by any citations in this section and try to add sources.MiMi2424 (talk) 21:17, 21 April 2019 (UTC)
