James Bayley Butler‎[edit]

Margeg15 (talk) 15:32, 8 July 2015 (UTC) Hello! I spotted your edit to the date of death for Katherine McWeeney in the James Bayley Butler‎ article, the Dictionary of Irish Biography gives it as 1926 so unless you have another source I will have to revert it, as it would need an additional citation to back that up. I know the DIB has a few errors in it so I wouldn't be that surprised if the date is wrong, but I'd love to add in your source for the date. Thanks Smirkybec (talk) 16:04, 7 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

From Margeg15: I'm new to trying to edit Wikipedia so I don't know if this is the right way to "talk"!

I'm the granddaughter of James Bayley Butler and made the change to his first wife's date of death. I have my mother's diary, the entry for 21st of April 1942 which states "Mother died this morning". I probably have other family papers which would verify date of death. Dictionary of Irish Biography must have got it wrong.

Another mistake is the caption on photo of retirement - the woman on left is Beatrice Dixon, JBBs daughter (my mother), not Eileen Doherty. I had previously contacted UCD digital archive about this, but obviously they didn't correct it, so I've emailed them again. Not even sure how to sign this but I'm Margeg15 Margeg15 (talk) 15:32, 8 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Margeg15, I'm very interested to hear more details about their lives. There are just one or two issues with the elements you have added. Firstly, there may be some issues with conflict of interest as you are related to the people at hand. It's not a huge deal, as you didn't write the initial articles, but in general it is best to avoid editing articles that you may have some bias towards or a "stake" in. Secondly, whilst I don't doubt that you have a more reliable source for Katherine McWeeney's death, the diary in your possession isn't a suitable source to cite from on Wikipedia. This is becuase nobody else can verify that fact as they are unpublished. You can read more about suitable sources here: Wikipedia:Identifying reliable sources. The same goes for the photograph unfortunately - sad but true! For the moment I will just remove the date of death for McWeeney altogether until we can find a suitable correct source. On a complete side note, the DIB makes reference to the McWeeney's being a literary family, do you know what this means? Thanks again for you edits, and if you need any help with anything just let me know! To sign a post all you need to do is insert four tildas ~~~~ at the end and it will add your signature!
