Information icon Hello, I'm ThaddeusSholto. I noticed that you recently removed content from Helen Fulton without adequately explaining why. In the future, it would be helpful to others if you described your changes to Wikipedia with an accurate edit summary. If this was a mistake, don't worry; the removed content has been restored. If you would like to experiment, please use your sandbox. If you think I made a mistake, or if you have any questions, you can leave me a message on my talk page. Thanks. Thank you. I am a colleague of Professor Fulton and we were trying to remove the banner which suggested the page was paid for content. While searching for the source code to do this we also made a number of changes to text where it was incorrect or badly expressed as this is a page we had not seen before. I attempted to describe this in the "reasons for editing" box. Munby's Ghost (talk) 17:36, 24 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
If you are a colleague of the article subject, then you have a conflict of interest and shouldn't edit the article directly. You should also WP:DISCLOSE this and any other COI you may have. ThaddeusSholto (talk) 17:37, 24 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
In that case you should know that the banner suggesting that the content was paid for means that the page is a professional embarassment to Professor Fulton and to a number of others to whom this has recently happened. She was approached by somebody claiming to be an accredited editor who offered to remove this banner for £250. We knew this to be a scam as Wikipedia does not allow editing to be paid for. So as a registered, though inexperienced editor, I offered to resolve the issue. How else can it ever be resolved? Perhaps you can resolve it for us. If you can we would be very grateful. It is definitely a scam if someone approached claiming to be able to edit for money. Let me look into the history to see who applied the tag and what the reasoning may have been. It may just have been there from earlier iterations. ThaddeusSholto (talk) 18:22, 24 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
OK, it looks like the original author of the article admitted to working for an organization that assigned them certain article subjects claiming they were associated with said organization. The organization was never named but my assumption is Learned Society of Wales as that appears to be common to all the articles authored by that person. That editor hasn't edited since September 2023 and the article and the link to LSoW has since been removed from the article. This with the fact that it was initially a draft but moved to article space by an uninvolved editor means I will tentatively remove the tag, although I cannot guarantee another editor won't restore it. Managing a conflict of interest

[edit]

Information icon Hello, Munby's Ghost. We welcome your contributions, but if you have an external relationship with the people, places or things you have written about on the page Helen Fulton, you may have a conflict of interest (COI). Editors with a conflict of interest may be unduly influenced by their connection to the topic. See the conflict of interest guideline and FAQ for article subjects for more information. We ask that you:

In addition, you are required by the Wikimedia Foundation's terms of use to disclose your employer, client, and affiliation with respect to any contribution which forms all or part of work for which you receive, or expect to receive, compensation. See Wikipedia:Paid-contribution disclosure.

Also, editing for the purpose of advertising, publicising, or promoting anyone or anything is not permitted. This isn't mean as a scary warning. This template has more information than I could easily type out for you. ThaddeusSholto (talk) 17:40, 24 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
