[edit]

The recent edit you made to mineral exploration has been reverted, as it appears to have added copyrighted material to Wikipedia without permission from the copyright holder. For legal reasons, we cannot accept copyrighted text or images borrowed from other web sites or printed material; such additions will be deleted. You may use external websites as a source of information, but not as a source of sentences. Wikipedia takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.

Please do not copy and paste material from your source as you did with both this edit on Mining and this edit on Mineral exploration. Please rewrite the information in your own words, and make sure you are not repeating information which is covered elsewhere in the article, as was the case with Mineral exploration. Please see how your addition to Mining was reworked to make it comply. Thank you, Turgan Talk 23:37, 5 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Since I am the Director, Marketing for Metals Economics Group, from the material was drawn, I hold the copyright permission for the materials I placed on Wikipedia and give my permission for its use. If there is an issue still let me know...I'm a newbie.

With regard to the edits to mineral exploration - MEG defines exploration stages of development for the industry. Where should these stages be included as they are not part of the current article?— Preceding unsigned comment added by Nadinet (talkcontribs) 11:54, 6 May 2009

There are a couple of issuse:
  1. If you are the director do you personally hold the copyright, or does the company, and are you authourized to release the copyright on their behalf (not just allow it's use). While you may be able to allow it's use, in order to use the report verbatim, the copyright of the report would have to be released under the GFDL, which would allow its use by anyone for any reason, including commercial purposes. In my experience, commercial companies (at least those that like to make money) are not usually willing to give up the copyright of their materials, it is just bad for business (no offense intended). There is a process for releasing copyright to Wikipedia, but rather than go through the process it is far easier to rewrite the content and cite the report as its source.
  2. The report is the opinion of MEG and I do not think that all companies use the same definition for company classification, or exploration stages and there is no reason for MEG's definitions to be used rather than another companies. I asked Turgan what his thoughts were on if the report qualified under Wikipedia's reliable sources guideline, I don't think it does, but I am not sure, so I asked for a second opinion. Typically what we use for reliable sources are newspapers, periodicals, professional journals etc. I hope this helps, please ask if you have any questions.

  • Thank you for your response. As Kelapstick has stated, there is a process to follow to verify the copyright, however it is much easier to just rewrite the information. It would also be your company, not you personally, which holds the copyright, so you would have to present proof that they have given you permission. Again, much easier to just rewrite it in your own words. Please see Wikipedia:Copyright violations for more info.
As for your additions of exploration stages, again, as Kelapstick has said, that is your company's opinion, not the industry "standard" nominclature. Additionally, where you placed it in the article was out of place, as the article discusses steps in the exploration process, not what stage particular properties are classified at. That is mentioned in a subsection later in the article. Potentially, your information could be used to expand that section.
Wikipedia is here as a resource for sharing information and educating people, not promoting a company or product. Please keep this in mind when making edits. As a director with MEG, please also ensure your contributions do not constitute a conflict of interest and adhere to wikipedia's policy of a neutral point of view.
Thanks, Turgan Talk 22:25, 6 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks to both of you for your helpful comments. I very much understand I do not personally hold the copyright. It is my part of my role to manage copyright at my company. I agree it would propobaly be best for a rewrite of any materials as we do not want to give up our copyright priveledges on reports, etc. I will definitely be cognizant of being objective in my posting and will use references outside the company such as journals and newspapers. I'm wondering if I could run some things by you in future before I post to make certain they are in line with and adhere to Wikipedia standards. (Nadinet (talk) 12:51, 7 May 2009 (UTC))[reply]

If you have any questions regarding this, or anything else Wikipedia related I would be glad to help you in the future, just leave me a note on my talk page. Happy editing! --kelapstick (talk) 15:06, 7 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
