Hi! It looks like the page on the pine family would offer you the most to work on. Work on your reference collection to see if you can get to ten things that you can contribute. Lethornton (talk) 22:08, 1 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Your ideas for adding the defense section look good. Make sure you are adding links to similar information if it is already there for other plants or defense responses. Lethornton (talk) 21:12, 16 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Nicole,

Great job with your first draft! I really liked how the material was scientific and objective, but the language was still simple enough for someone without the background to understand. Moreover, the it was organized well so that there was a nice and clear introduction to the section, a summary paragraph and a little conclusion that discussed where the field and research is today. Also, you really incorporated your sources well, citing multiple articles for certain sentences (which shows that your research is well corroborated). There were a few grammatical errors that I've listed below, but overall good job!

Grammatical Errors

[edit]

So, I put your original sentence in bold and in quotation marks and my comments underneath.

"In order to combat these stresses, trees need to adapt or evolved defenses against these stresses." This sentence has two different verb tenses (future and past). I would change the sentence either to trees need to adapt or evolve defensive strategies or trees have adapted and evolved defenses.

"Pinaceae have the ability to up-regulate combination of constitutive mechanical and chemical defenses to further their defenses." Should be *to up-regulate a combination of constitutive mechanical and chemical. Also, it is just my personal taste, but I suggest using another word (like strategies) so that the word defense isn't used twice in the same sentence.

"One area where Pinaceae defenses are prevalent is the bark of the trees." This sentence is kind of awkward. I would recommend just saying Pinaceae defenses are prevalent in the bark of the trees

"Constitutive defenses are always expressed and offer immediate protection from invaders but could also defeated by antagonists that have evolved adaptations to these defense mechanisms." Sentence should be corrected to *...but could also be defeated...

"One common secondary compound used by Pinaceae are phenolics or polyphenols." This sentence could be reworded to be more clear. One of the common secondary compounds used by...

"Resins are also one of the primary defenses used for defense against attack a." I am not sure if you are saying that resin is used against attacks (in plural) or listing a specific attack (attack A).

"Resins have the ability to wash away, trap, fend off antagonists, and also involved in wound sealing." Sentence should be corrected to *and are also involved...

"They are are a effective defense mechanism because they have toxic and inhibitory effects on invaders such as insects or pathogens." Sentence should be "They are an effective... effects on invaders, such as insects or pathogens."

"They are found in tissues secretory tissues in tree stems, roots, and leaves." Should be "They are found in secretory tissues..."

Oleoresin is also a needed in order to classify conifers." Remove "a" to have "Oleoresin is also needed in order to classify conifers."

"It has been found that MJ stimulated the activation of PP cells and formation of xylem traumatic resin ducts (TD) which are structures that are involved in the release of phenolics and resins, both forms of defense mechanism." This sentence is long and can be split up into two separate sentences.

Instructor comments: You have gathered a nice amount of information to add to this page. It looks like you have used a reasonable amount of literature to support your writing, and the writing still has easy to read sentences. The middle paragraph is especially long, so it would help to break up your ideas with subheadings, such as constitutive and induced defenses. You have a lot on resin, but could add a little more information on other defenses. It also would help to link words that are found on other Wikipedia pages. Think about how you will work your writing onto the current page, and make sure to be consistent with how you format headings and subheadings.Lethornton (talk) 02:28, 16 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
