In a later episode it was revealed that Ash's Pikachu doesn't want to evolve, this became apparent after a battle with Brock? It preferred to stay the way it was, no matter what. It goes so far as to knock the Thunder Stone out of Ash's hand. (This paragraph needs to be referenced)
