My recent post at Talk:American Left

I'm writing to apologize about responding to your post here with my post here. My intent at creating that section of the talk page and writing what I wrote before you arrived was to attempt to change the view of the article's creator about the scope of the entire article he'd created. That's a very difficult and often impossible thing to do. I'd seen multiple editors on other parts of the talk page and article history attempt to do the same thing for years and have their words repeatedly ignored. In response to seeing that, I went down a path of intentional mockery on the talk page in order to try to drive my message home to the article's creator. He has been at Wikipedia for a long time, so I felt the need to paint with a broad brush. It may have been a mistake for me to do that, but I don't think it was. In the long run, I think my exchange with the article's creator will prove to be best for the encyclopedia and for the reader. My behavior on the talk page with the article's creator can be described by the lower right arrow on the diagram at [1] . However, the way I replied to you definitely was an awful mistake and I regret it. I shouldn't have written to you the way I did. I hope you consider returning to that talk page and contributing your ideas and opinions there (in a different section of the talk page). Your contributions there and elsewhere on Wikipedia are valuable even if I disagree with them. Flying Jazz (talk) 10:05, 16 February 2015 (UTC)

Thanks for the reply on my talk page. I've mostly been a science guy at Wikipedia, so (believe it or not) I'm not invested much in the American Left article either. But I do care about the written word, so I care about people reading and replying to things that others take the time to type. Your academic experience that the term "the Left" does often get used in the very narrow sense taken up in that article might be based on some textbook or other source that would convince people, including me, that the article creator's scope actually is best for the encyclopedia after all. If that's case then I hope you write about those sources in the American Left talk page to help us achieve consensus about scope over there. A pretty-good-but-not-great essay is at WP:Scope that describes what I'm talking about, but feel free to ignore the essay if you think it will help the encyclopedia's reader. If you're into textual analysis, examining user contributions, examining user talk pages, examining article histories, proper citations, creating a well-referenced lead and scope of an encyclopedia article, the current political situation in the USA, and similar things, the tale at User:Flying_Jazz and Talk:American_Left#Encyclopedia_of_the_American_Left_2nd_ed._1998_verification_failure_.28use_of_first_edition.27s_preface.29 (and beyond) can provide hours of joy and amusement. It's delectable. It's the sort of fun you can have at Wikipedia if you have a bit of time to delve into the heart of what this place actually is and also what it claims to be, and if your genuine goal is to improve the encyclopedia in every sense in the long term.
