The 1978-79 Syracuse Orangemen basketball team represented Syracuse University. The Head Coach was Jim Boeheim, serving for his 3rd year. The team played its home games at the Manley Field House in Syracuse, New York. The team finished with a 26-4 record, while making it to the Sweet Sixteen of the 1979 NCAA Men's Division I Basketball Tournament.

Developments

  • Eric Devendorf[2] and Andy Rautins[3] both suffered season ending knee injuries
  • Scoop Jardine was suspended for three games[4]
  • Josh Wright and Devin Brennan-McBride both quit the team[5]
  • Donte Greene declared for the NBA draft following the conclusion of the season[6]
  • Jonny Flynn was named co-Big East Rookie of the Year[7]
  • This marked the first season since 1982 that Syracuse missed back-to-back NCAA Tournaments
