User talk:PappaG
Hi, I'm new to this...please feel free to contact me here and I will do my best to reply
I saw your discussion on the Kent Hovind article. I wish you luck there. It seems some users there insist on keeping the article quite biased. You can see that after a brief discussion on the talk page I decided it wasn't worth the effort. Rljacobson 00:14, 30 April 2006 (UTC)
- Not sure if I reply to you here or on your talk page (what is the norm?)...I know you stated on the Hovind talk page that you were busy and like you, I have no interest in getting involved in edit wars. That's why I put my views on the talk page in the hope that over time, other users will add their 2 cents worth and perhaps go ahead and make some of the edits themselves based on the discussions. I could really appreciate you adding your support where you view appropriate next to my discussion items to get the ball rolling - no need to get into a debate thereafter. Like you, I'm not biased either way, just feel quite strongly about a non biased article, especially being a biography! For now, I've opted for less controversial topics like cycling :) Thanks! Johannesburg suburbs
[edit]Welcome to Wikipedia! I hope you enjoy your stay :)
As for the Johannesburg suburb articles, basically the view is that Wikipedia is not a paper encyclopaedia, in otherwords, there is no limit on content or size. As long as things can be shown to exist or be talked about, there is no reason why they shouldn't have an article if they are relevant. Páll (Die pienk olifant) 22:07, 30 April 2006 (UTC)
- Thanks for clarifying - was just a kneejerk reaction that it creates a whole bunch of stubs which will for the most part never get to full size articles. Must have taken you forever though! :) Any chance of creating a separate stub category called Johannesburg Suburb Stubs. I would really like to see other Johannesburg articles which are stubs which I can contribute to in the Johannesburg Stub category? PappaG 22:27, 30 April 2006 (UTC)
- I think it took me about 5-6 days just to get the ones I have up, I don't have all of them done yet. Take a look at Category:Johannesburg stubs, those are all Johannesburg-related stubs that could use attention! Páll (Die pienk olifant) 02:32, 1 May 2006 (UTC)
Welcome to the World of Wikipedia, PappaG, I must say it is better here than on the Isidingo set. Anyway about the Johannesburg suburb articles, yes I am all for anything good that puts South Africa on the wikimap. For example someone in the states hears that I live in Douglasdale and does a search on wikipedia, they will find that it is a suburb of Johannensburg, they won't find that in the Encyclopædia Britannica. Although most of them are only stubs, they should grow in the future. It is good to have more South Africans writing articles about South Africa, no offence Páll ;-) --Jcw69 09:04, 1 May 2006 (UTC)
- Ahem, I lived in Cape Town for five years and have an ugly green passport, Jcw! Páll (Die pienk olifant) 14:08, 1 May 2006 (UTC)
- Thanks for the welcome. Could we not create a SEPARATE Johannesburg Suburb Stub...the other Johannesburg Stubs are getting a bit lost amongst the suburb articles?
- The category of Johannesburg suburbs becomes valuable when it is complete. You want a list of Johannesburg suburbs ? cut-n-paste the category page - it does not matter that the articles themselves are only stubs. Re: replies - it is a matter of preference, but I keep them all on the same page. Your watchlist takes care of tracking replies. And - welcome to wikipedia ! Wizzy…☎ 09:43, 1 May 2006 (UTC)

- Anything is possible. Create the category, modify all the relevant articles. Be Bold. Why don't you whittle away at the stubs you are interested in ? We value content over everything. Wizzy…☎ 17:34, 1 May 2006 (UTC)
- No ways I'm modifying 500 suburbs :) Was hoping you were going to tell me about some bot functionality or the other which I'm not familiar with. Would much rather click on Johannesburg Stubs and see 20 articles that need some attention than having to wade through 500 suburbs trying to spot the odd one out. Not to worry! Not that important. Thanks for taking the time... PappaG 17:48, 1 May 2006 (UTC)
Please discuss the matter with other editors on the talk page. You can contact Duncharris on his user talk page, like you did with me. The dispute resolution process here emphasises discussion on the article talk with a view to reaching consensus. As an uninvolved editor, I cannot do much more than advise you to be mindful that in a dispute, discussion is always better than reversion. The three-revert rule is an electric fence, not an entitlement; editors have been banned for violating the spirit but hewing to the letter of the rule. As such, I would advise you to refrain from reverting the edit, and discuss the issues on the talk page. It appears that many of your reasons for tagging the article as non-neutral aren't very solid, but there's still a reasonable case for arguing that the standard of writing could be more encyclopedic. Anyway, I'll leave that to you guys. Have fun! Johnleemk | Talk 14:01, 1 May 2006 (UTC)
- Yes, you need to explain why the article is biased, keeping in mind WP:NPOV#pseudoscience and the the fact that the well-established principles of WP:NPOV must be applied. So far you've only said that "some people don't like it, therefore it's biased". — Dunc|☺ 14:10, 1 May 2006 (UTC)
- Hi Dunc|☺, I have a whole section at the bottom of the article explaining why (amongst other things) which you have not commented on prior to your first revert. I happen to agree with Helicon. Other users would agree with your side of the argument...in my mind that's a disagreement...albeit small (dispute is a bit aggressive) but in my mind warrants a simple banner. I still don't know what you're afraid of by having it there...more users commenting on the article? After your first revert, I made some additional comments which you did not respond to - you simply reverted...at least revert and make some comments - I'm more than happy to engage in a discussion with you. Proof : I haven't reverted your revert - I have no desire to get into a war with you.
- On biase, I think there are lots of examples, a few of which I have included at the bottom of the Hovind talk page - I would value your input there. A simple example is an extract from the article which says 'flat out false arguments' - clearly contains unnecessary adjectives which are emotive and therefore biased. I Look forward to working with you in the future on the article. -- PappaG 14:35, 1 May 2006 (UTC)
- I would say that there is scope to improve the article, but I would also say that it is on balance pretty neutral. Certainly no reason to NPOV tag the entire article. Just zis Guy you know? 21:58, 1 May 2006 (UTC)

Discussion Replies
[edit]PappaG, it is a matter of preference. If the discussion is about an article, I keep it on the article's discussion page, but with discussions with other users, most tend to leave messages on my talk and I replay on theirs, this way I can keep track only on my talk page not on hundards of other users talk pages. --Jcw69 15:33, 1 May 2006 (UTC)

Call for Wikipedians in Residence in Africa
[edit]Hello,
I hope you are well and thriving!! WikiAfrica has just put out a call for two Wikipedians in Residence. One in Cape Town at WikiAfrica, at the Africa Centre; and the other for WikiAfrica Cameroon in Douala, at doual’art. If you are interested, please contact either Marilyn [marilyn.doualabelldoualart.org] for the WikiAfrica Cameroon call or Isla [islahfafricacentre.net] for the WikiAfrica position in Cape Town.
If you are not interested in applying, I would be very grateful if you could spread this call far and wide among your networks to ensure that both projects get excellent candidates. Here is the link for the information page: http://www.wikiafrica.net/two-wikipedians-in-residence-for-africa/
Best regards, Islahaddow
