Instructor feedback for article draft

[edit]

Nice start overall, but there are several areas for improvement.

The lead section adds some good information. Make sure to proofread for typos and grammatical errors. I'm not sure what you mean by "Friends with benefits can be though of by what they are not." This sentence needs clarification and elaboration.

The context section has some interesting information, especially about the brothels in ancient times. However, I think you can draw a more sophisticated distinction between sexual encounters, non-committal sexual relationships, and friends with benefits relationships. There are some are some nuanced and distinct communication patterns that likely distinguish these types of encounters. I think you can provide much more depth here. Also, do you have a source for the Alanis Morissette claim? A little more context here would be helpful.

in the "dating and digital age" section try to avoid making claims about causality unless you have some sources to support it. I think you can bring in some research in this area to provide more depth about how dating operates in these new mediated spaces. The "sexual liberation" section has a fairly colloquial style (e.g., "chalked up") and could be revised for more academic/encyclopedia style. There needs to be a little more historical context in this section. Also, there needs to be a direct connection between sexual liberation and FWB.

The "Feminism" section provides a concise explanation of why culture might be more accepting of sex outside of procreation, but feminism has a long and complex history. Try to provide some historical context here. Not that you need to trace the historical evolution of feminism, but some of the processes you mention here have been occurring a long time before friends with benefits was a "thing." Just like the last section I think you can make a stronger connection back to why feminism contributes to FWB. The theories section is a nice walk through of several theories. In the present form some of these theories (RTT and Equity theory) fit better than other theories (Uses and gratifications and cultivation theory). I think you can bolster the argument for the two that don't fit as well. In the RTT section be careful to not draw a direct association between FWB having more uncertainty and that leads to dissatisfaction. RTT is about increasing and moderate amounts of uncertainty leads to dissatisfaction, not that more uncertainty leads to more dissatisfaction. Instead of saying "If RTT is true" try "According to RTT"

Overall, I think you have some nice components for this Wiki article. I think there needs to be more depth throughout, explanations of how each component connects to the phenomenon of FWB, and additional content about what we know from research about friends with benefits relationships.

Remember to use proper APA style throughout. You will likely need to manual edit the citations rather than relying on the Wiki citation tool. Jrpederson (talk) 14:34, 15 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]
