Too tired to think about answering the above, but here's some tables that illustrate some things.

Example 1 - class=wikitable

	The data
default	1 xxx	2 xxx	3 xxx	4 xxx	5 xxx
left	1	2	3	4	5
center	1	2	3	4	5
right	1	2	3	4	5
using "! x || x ||"	1	2	3	4	5	Note that they're all bold and centered
using "! x !! x !!"	1	2	3	4	5	Identcal result
split	1	2	3	4	5	Note that "!" line is bold-centered, but "|" line is "default" (=left)

Example 2 - Same, but without the class=wikitable
