Username concerns[edit]

Hello, and welcome to Wikipedia!

I hope not to seem unfriendly or make you feel unwelcome, but I noticed your username, and I am concerned that it might not meet Wikipedia's username policy for the following reason: It is the name of a commercial entity (a website). After you look over that policy, could we discuss that concern here?

I'd appreciate learning your own views, for instance your reasons for wanting this particular name, and what alternative username you might accept that avoids raising this concern.

You have several options freely available to you:

Thank you. —C.Fred (talk) 05:13, 13 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

This account has been blocked indefinitely from editing Wikipedia, because it has been identified as an account used for promotion of a company or group, with a username that implies that this has been done by that company or group. See Wikipedia:Business' FAQ and Wikipedia:Conflict of interest.

This kind of activity is considered spamming and is forbidden by Wikipedia policies. In addition, the use of a username like yours violates our username policy.

You may appeal this block by adding the text {{unblock|your reason here}} below or emailing the administrator who blocked you.

Your reason should include your response to this issue and a new username you wish to adopt that does not violate our username policy (specifically, understand that accounts are for individuals, not companies or groups, and that your username should reflect this). Usernames that have already been taken are listed here.

Response to email[edit]

I'm new to Wikipedia. You asked me to change my username. I don't plan on promoting my website or business but just inform people what my business is just like the way Wal-mart has a page I would like the opportunity to do the same. Is this all right to do? Apparently sent by User:RealEstateExplorer via email ([redacted]@realestateexplorer.net), 05:39, 13 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

There are a couple of problems:
  1. You have a conflict of interest, in that you are writing about your company. It is best to let an independent party write the article, using information about the company found in third-party sources...the same way Walmart's article has been written.
  2. The use of your company name as your username is a violation of the username policy. That, combined with your intent to write about the company, is what got your account blocked.
The short answer, unfortunately, is no, that's not okay. The long answer is that if the company is a notable company, and if independent, reliable sources have covered the company, then other editors can write a neutral article on the company. However, Wikipedia is not an advertising for promoting your business, which is what it appears your intent is, even if you describe it as "inform"ing. —C.Fred (talk) 01:46, 14 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
