File size not checked

[edit]

On 26 April 2009 this bot added a suggestion to the Talk:DVD-Video#Image:DVD-Regions_with_key.png page suggesting the use of File:DVD-Regions with key-2.svg instead of Image:DVD-Regions_with_key.png. I generally agree that the use of an SVG file is preferable over a raster format. However, a major reason for the preference is that vector graphics commonly are much smaller than raster formats. However, that is not always the case and should not be assumed by the bot. In this instance the SVG file is 1.68MB whereas the PNG file is a mere 16KB (about 1%). I would suggest that the bot be enhanced to compare the file sizes of the SVG and raster graphics. At some threshold the other factors which make vector graphics preferable to a raster format would make it reasonable to recommend using a larger SVG file. But this is certainly not an instance where that is the case. Makyen (talk) 10:52, 15 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

PNGs are generated server-side and cached, so the SVG is not actually served, so the end filesize is in fact the same. The PNG being automatically generated is far preferable to manual generation. I think the current behaviour makes sense, as it directs users to the SVG relatively quickly. That said, your suggestion is relatively simple to implement, so if you really feel that, considering my current statement, it should be done then this is not too much work.
