Hampton-on-Sea

If you have information and citations regarding Reculver, then that material belongs on the Reculver page (not on the Hampton-on-Sea page). If you are at the University of Kent at Canterbury (if that's what you mean by KU), then you can easily get on the bus (which passes near the university) and walk from Reculver to Hampton. The walk will take you more than an hour, probably. You will then see that Reculver and H-o-S are completely different places.

I remember the famous dig at Reculver in the 70s, I visited it at the time, and it was limited to a small area at Reculver, and did not involve the undersea Hampton-on-Sea site at all. Most of the people at Hampton. before the oyster company, came from Kentish farming families. The oyster company management came from outside the area. When Hampton-on-Sea was developed with a few rows of houses, the new inhabitants came from London etc. The Ancient Romans did farm oysters in that area of the Thames Estuary when they were in the area, but when they left in the 5th century AD, the people left behind were Anglo-Romans, which means local Kentish people who had adopted Roman ways - mostly not people with Roman blood.

If you have something controversial to say, you need to include clear quotations from your source. It would be helpful to include their evidence, and give the quotation as the opinion of the writer of the source. Storye book (talk) 08:41, 29 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for your edit on Hampton-on-Sea. You will see that I have removed your text, but I have added your James citation to the article, because although it adds no new information, it does contain some old photographs that we didn't have already, and we can use it as a citation to confirm information that we already have. I have had to remove your paragraph about the weblog, because blogs are not considered to be authoritative sources on Wikipedia, except for special cases, such as a peer-reviewed one written by a well-qualified curator on a museum website. I have removed your paragraph about an article which does not refer to Hampton-on-Sea at all, as you yourself indicated.

I think that you might be able to contribute a lot and learn a lot if you were to ask your supervisor to help you create a draft article on Wikipedia. It would then be peer-reviewed by Wikipedia editors (and perhaps your supervisor too?). If Herne Bay is your main interest, you might like to contact the Herne Bay Historical Records Society, and see if they would let you use their bound copies of the Herne Bay Press newspaper as authoritative sources. Your university should be able to give you free access to the British Newspaper Archive and other sources.

You might also enjoy adding a new section to the article French Dressing (1964 film) (not anthropology, but a good way to learn how to edit Wikipedia). The filming process drew a lot attention in local newspapers in 1963-1964. Filming started in May 1963, but newspapers were heralding it excitedly before that. You would then be able to add some contrasting information, in your new section, because the local people and journalists were very excited about the filming, and looking forward to seeing the film - a contrast to Ken Russell's attitude. But I would suggest writing a draft first, perhaps in your sandbox, which is accessible from the top of your screen if you are using pc-view or laptop-view (not phone view). I would be happy to look at it for you if you like, or no doubt your supervisor can help. So, to sum up - use your sandbox for trying out paragraphs for adding to articles, and create a draft article if you want to write the whole thing yourself - and ask for help before publishing. It looks as if the main contribution you sought to make to the article about Hampton-on-Sea was in the form of discussions of three articles. Please note that Wikipedia is an encyclopedia and that appropriate references should be included as footnotes using the correct reference tags. Storye book, the Wikipedia editor who made the reversion of your edits, has some good advice and recommendations. I hope that you will consider following up on these. The recommendation to write a draft first in your sandbox and then having me or Storye book review it would be a good way to proceed. I think that the information you have assembled about Hampton-on-Sea is important, especially given the dangers of coastal erosion to other communities. You should also consider adding hyperlinks to the Hampton-on-Sea article from other relevant Wikipedia articles about coastal erosion so that researchers on those topics will be able to learn about it.
