"Recursive"

[edit]

Hi, just a minor quibble. The bot uses the phrase "recursive categories" in its comments and talk page additions. "Recursive" means something that is defined in terms of itself—see Recursion or the Wiktionary entry. A recursive category might be one that includes itself, but I don't think that's what you mean. Perhaps you mean "descendant categories"? —johndburger 14:56, 7 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I agree, "recursive" is the wrong term. As an alternative, I propose "subcategories". — Sebastian 16:20, 12 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Yep, "recursive" is an oddity in Wikipedia:AutoWikiBrowser; uses this throughout to refer to what normally would be called dependent/ descendant. Has something to do with the structure/hierarchy of the way the categories are handled. [...] SkierRMH 18:31, 12 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Did you forward the complaint to the appropriate person or page? — Sebastian 18:48, 12 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

In addition to the above, please change the following to make the message clearer:

  • "please remove this message" -> "please remove this message, but leave the template"
  • Don't assume that every user knows which class parameters the WikiProject Biography template happens to allow, and change the steps to bullets like below:

If you disagree with the assessment, please do the following:
*# remove the stub template from the article.
*# change "class=stub" to "class=start" or another applicable class per [[Wikipedia:WikiProject Biography/Assessment#Quality scale]].

Thank you! — Sebastian 16:20, 12 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

[...] I did add the reference to the class rating for the biography project to the bot message. SkierRMH 18:31, 12 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Where did you add this? I don't see it in your contributions. — Sebastian 18:48, 12 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Wrong changes

[edit]

Check out Talk:Kazuo_Ozaki - It will show in the Bot's user contributions, not mine!SkierRMH 21:11, 12 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I just realized that this change is wrong! Maybe it's not so easy to explain this in words. Can I edit the template, please? Hold on the bot for a few minutes, and if you don't like it you can revert it. — Sebastian 21:24, 12 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I'm Using Wikipedia:AutoWikiBrowser, so just leave your suggestion here and I'll take a look at it. (& PS, you'll need to bring up the "recursive" question with the AWB developers, they use it consistently & I'm just being consistent with their use). SkiersBot 06:41, 13 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I am not making a new suggestion. You just misunderstood what I wrote. To avoid such misunderstandings for us and for any other editors who might have other suggestions, I created User:SkiersBot/message (edit | talk | history | links | watch | logs). If you just actually use the text of that template, as per your statement "The additional template will be appended", then I'll be happy. — Sebastian 19:15, 13 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I noticed that you now changed the message to something that is closer to the template, but it's still not the same, and it is less clear. Why would you want to unindent the subitems to the second bullet so that they stick out further than the bullet?
I am further disappointed that you did not fix the existing wrong messages, as you are obliged per WP:BOTS#Repairing damage. — Sebastian 00:00, 16 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
