[edit]Your username is the only reason for this block. You are welcome to choose a new username (see below) and continue editing.A username should not be promotional, related to a "real-world" group or organization, misleading, offensive or disruptive. Also, usernames may not end in the word "bot" unless the account is an approved bot account.You are encouraged to choose a new account name that meets our policy guidelines and create the account yourself. Alternatively, if you have already made edits and you wish to keep your existing contributions under a new name, then you may request a change in username by:
- Adding
{{unblock-un|your new username here}}
below. You should be able to do this even though you are blocked, as you can usually still edit your own talk page. If not, you may wish to contact the blocking administrator by clicking on "Email this user" on their talk page. - At an administrator's discretion, you may be unblocked for 24 hours to file a request.
- Please note that you may only request a name that is not already in use, so please check here for a listing of already taken names. The account is created upon acceptance, thus do not try to create the new account before making the request for a name change. For more information, please see Wikipedia:Changing username.

below this notice, but you should read our guide to appealing blocks first. ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 09:58, 29 October 2018 (UTC)SoapWithRope (block log • active blocks • global blocks • contribs • deleted contribs • filter log • creation log • change block settings • unblock • checkuser (log))
Request reason:
I'm assuming I caught the bot's attention because it may have thought my username is somehow sexual, although I'm not sure how it's "wired" yet, so I could be completely off base. I looked at the list of users and searched things like, "SoapOn," which shows that plenty of other users have similar names. I mainly just want a human admin to check out the bot's block and determine themselves if my name is okay. Thank you so much for your time, regardless of the result!
Accept reason:
Unblocked per discussion below, welcome back. Boing! said Zebedee (talk) 10:50, 29 October 2018 (UTC)
- You weren't blocked by a bot or an automated process. You were blocked by me, because your username can be read and interpreted as being inappropriate and offensive by other editors. Please follow the instructions provided in the block notice given to you in order to request your username be renamed to something else, or you can create a new account with an appropriate username. I'll leave your unblock request to be evaluated by another administrator. Thanks :-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 10:32, 29 October 2018 (UTC)
- Note to reviewing administrator: You're welcome to unblock this account if you disagree with my response above and feel that this username is acceptable - you don't need my prior approval. Just let me know that you did so and your thoughts that contributed to the decision. :-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 10:35, 29 October 2018 (UTC)
- @Oshwah: Would you please explain what might be "inappropriate and offensive" about the username? Maybe it's something cultural, but I'm not seeking it. Boing! said Zebedee (talk) 10:38, 29 October 2018 (UTC)
- Boing! said Zebedee - I originally read it as being close enough to the term "Soap on a rope", which is typically referred to in a derogatory way to reference a culture of men being raped or sexually assaulted in jail or prison while taking a shower with other inmates. The soap "needs a rope" so that you don't have to bend over to pick it up after you've dropped it, exposing... yourself to being.... yeah. I hope my explanation is helpful. Again, feel free to unblock this person if you feel that this username is appropriate. I'm just explaining how I interpreted the username to being close to when I saw it in the new user logs. Cheers :-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 10:43, 29 October 2018 (UTC)
- Ah, right, I'd never heard that - to me "soap on a rope" is just an innocent commercial product ;-) Anyway, thanks for the explanation, but I think the term is generic/vague enough to avoid being offensive, so with your agreement I'll unblock. Boing! said Zebedee (talk) 10:48, 29 October 2018 (UTC)
- Boing! said Zebedee - After looking at it again, I agree with your thoughts. The use of the word "with" in the username makes it ambiguous enough to me to give the user the benefit of the doubt. Thanks for reviewing, for giving your input, and for unblocking. SoapWithRope - I apologize for holding you up with the username block I applied. I hope that you understand "the method behind the madness" and why we apply username blocks in certain situations (your situation was a miss on my part). Please feel free to message me on my user talk page here if you have any questions or need any help, and I'll be happy to lend a hand. Welcome, and happy editing! :-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 10:57, 29 October 2018 (UTC)
- I meant to respond to this a long time ago, but forgot amidst other things.
@Oshwah: I definitely understand the need to moderate this sort of thing and, although I can easily see how you'd be able to come to that conclusion, I can assure you that the term is used in an innocent context. For more than eight years, I've used usernames such as SoapOnARope, SoapWithRope, Soap, etc. across more online communities than I could count. Although I can't recall how the name first came to mind, I was immediately fond of the shorthand version, "Soap," as well as how the rhyme between "soap" and "rope" rolls off the tongue. I know it's unnecessary, but proof of my lengthy history with the name, can be found on my Steam profile. It has been the only name I've used for over eight years (check the drop down menu next to my name for all previous names. As for the age, check the "Badges" page for the "Years of Service" badge) and is also used with a much older profile linked further down the page. I know that others may use it in an explicit context, but, as Boing! said Zebedee said, my first thought is of the product itself. Although I may be biased through desensitization via hearing and seeing it a lot, since it's my name online. I appreciate you being understanding and, not only work with, but actually want and wait for another admin's opinion.
@Boing! said Zebedee: Thank you as well for taking the time to provide another point of view and deciding to unblock me. I know there are a lot of admins, thus lowering the odds of having someone random care to truly discuss my appeal, as opposed to "getting it over with," but I wouldn't have expected even this much discussion over a username appeal for an account that, from an outside view, has the potential to be another inactive throwaway. Thank you both. SoapWithRope (talk) 01:32, 6 January 2019 (UTC)
