Hello,

I have many wonderful memories also of Ballast key from 1972, 1973 time period. I was only in my early twenties and ended up on Ballast key for 6 months. A man named Captain Jack took myself and two other friends there for a stay of only 2 weeks. Had to bring in our on dry provisions and fresh water. Jack dropped us off and came back two weeks later for us, we sailed on to Key West and my friends went home to Pennsylvania, I asked Jack if he would take me back to the island and come check up on me every week or so. I ended up staying 6 months. It was an amazing journey for me I have never been on any island that even came close to the beauty of this island. There was a man named Scotty who had been staying on the island for quite some time, he was quite interesting. Loved his old sailboat. There was no building on the island at that time and we stayed on the windy side of the island to keep the mosquitos from bothering us. I am quite blessed to of experienced such of wonderful island. After I came back from the key I met some old time sailors on Key West and told them of my time there. That was when I learned that swimming to the nearby island for the incredible shells on the beach was a life threating journey. I guess the sharks just loved the channel between the two islands. Oh well I am alive and I sometimes journey back in my mind of my experiences on Ballast Key. I never dreamed so many people would visit there after I left. If you would like to chat more on my experiences I would love to share them with you.

Linda
