User talk:Stnickvillager
I'm familiar with Wikipedia.
St vs "St."
[edit]I've only just noticed that you moved St Nicholas at Wade to St. Nicholas-at-Wade, saying "Old page uses a technically incorrect form of the village name, this has been rather annoying for a while so moving page to the exact name as per wikipedia guidelines".
While I agree that Nicholas-at-Wade should probably be hyphenated, I disagree on the full stop, and especially on the "wikipedia guidelines" comment. If you read Abbreviation#Periods_.28full_stops.29_and_spaces you'll notice this:
[...] In formal British English, according to Hart's Rules, it is more common to write abbreviations with full stops if the word has been cut at the point of abbreviation but not otherwise [...] In American English, the period is usually added if the abbreviation might otherwise be interpreted as a word [...] A third standard removes the full stops from all abbreviations (both "Saint" and "Street" become "St").
Fowler's Modern English Usage also says that the period should not be used if the last letter is the same in the full form (Saint) as in the shortened form (St). And finally, even Snick's own parish magazine uses "St Nicholas-at-Wade".
Hence may I suggest you switch it to "St Nicholas-at-Wade"? Ozaru (talk) 18:50, 4 September 2008 (UTC)
Reply - If it hasn't already been done, I agree with that. Thanks!
Additional - All done, thanks Ben.
