Billy Bennett

[edit]

Hi, thanks for the enlightening James Agate quote on Billy Bennett. Can you provide a reference please? Cutler 19:28, 21 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Cutler, unfortunately I can not figure out how to reply to you, I'm a new user. So I'm editing this entry. You are my first respondent. The citation is Ego 5, by Agate, page 242, part of a longer eulogy for Bennett on July 1 1947. I am going to add this to the Bennett entry. I didn't cite it when I put it in, meant to do it later when I had access to my books. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Swamptortoise (talkcontribs) 00:13, August 22, 2007 (UTC).

No prob. It's good practice to put citations in for all you edits as you do them. Standards are much higher these days than the free for all of when I started 4 years ago. But ALL contributions are welcome! Please ask me if you need any help. Editing your own talk page is fine as I was watching it. You could also have edited my talk page User talk:Cutler. Please "autosign" your talk page messages with 4 tildes like this: "~~~~" and it will automatically add your id, date, time, like this: Cutler 07:40, 22 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Here is some reading for your leisure: Wikipedia:Citing sources. Cutler 07:40, 22 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Very Helpful. I'm learning. ~~~~ —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 66.217.130.188 (talk) 01:29, August 23, 2007 (UTC)

James Agate.

[edit]

Thank you very much for your note. I didn't mean to 'dismiss' Agate in any way: i have the highest regard for him. I have not read all of Ego, merely some of the later volumes; and had the good fortune of inheriting a scrapbook containing some of his theatre reviews otherwise, to the best of my knowledge, uncollected.

That being said, I was quoting Muir, where he, in his brief introduction to Agate calls him a "brilliant collector of brief but telling remarks", and describes the EGOs as causeries, saying that they contain "scraps of recorded conversation" and "incongruities of human behaviour and speech", for which Agate had a very "finely tuned ear".

Thank you, again, and I encourage you to edit further. Relata refero 15:12, 22 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I've come over to your viewpoint, after further deliberation. Agate collected many aphorisms from those around him. SwampT (talk) 16:27, 27 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page.
