Why can't I edit Wikipedia?

I author the free Arduino addin for Visual Studio and provide a free forum for all arduino plugins. I didn't realise that I had to use my own name and not an alias and was blocked today adding a link to the Arduino page for the the Visual Micro product. I must add that I waited until there had been 9000 downloads (in the past 5 months), that the link does not bring any advertising revenue and was soley added because the addin has proved to be a valuable product for many users. I hope you can see that I am not a spammer, have invested a great deal of time providing the product and have waited until many thousands of users have benefited Visual Micro (talk) 20:09, 15 May 2012 (UTC)

I understand the need to comment on officially recognised and published topics or subjects. I am the inventor of a unique usb debugger for Arduino and intend to write an article about the architecture of the debugger and also to make a useful link under the Arduino page. The debugger has been blogged by many sites unconnected with myself, I am not a spammer and have useful and unique content to add to wikipedia. The debugger and toolset that I have invented is unique, Arduino does not provide these tools and they are not copied or provided by any other party. I provide a support forum for users to ensure professional support, the forum has grown by 3000 users in the first months of this year. Atmel will also shortly be making annoucements about this tool, so I will then expect to extend the Atmel wikipedia page(s) with similar links.

You have made it abundantly clear that your intention is to use Wikipedia to bring attention to your work, to make a wider public aware of it: that is to say to promote it. {unblock-spamun|TLeek|Hi, since I originally attempted to write about my amateur hobby passion that has resulted in Visual Micro I have learned alot about wikipedia. Actually, my intention has never been to spam and I do provide free software to thousands or happy people. However, I do also now understand that with so many web users there needs to be a difference between writing about a passionate achievement that one is proud of and writing a factual unbiased document. I do now realize that in wikipedia terms there can be little distinction between a commercial overview of a product and an overview of a hobby product. I realize now that they are both just products. My original attempt to write about a unique extension to Visual Studio might have been more acceptable if I had concentrated more on the architecture used to create an alliance between two famous products "Microsoft and Arduino". Two manufacturers that often have nothing in common. Furthermore since my original attempt to write about a product instead of a factual article I have invented the first and only debugger for Arduino development. I would like to write about how the debugger works and how it can allow Visual Studio to do what the Arduino does not allow to be done. Again this will be a factual and accurate description of protocols and the architecture required to achieve this result. This might be submitted to wikipedia as a general overview of the various concepts under the Visual Micro page linking to child pages that describe the various mechanisms and protocols used on an avr/Arduino mcu and in Visual Studio. I hope to extend these pages over time to become a useful guide allowing other developers to implement similar solutions. I request a name change because whilst I will certainly write some topics under the Visual Micro page I would also like to expand other areas that I or others have created without appearing to plug or use the Visual Micro name. In the past, I know I would have got blocked anyway for reasons described in my response.

However, I also did not do myself justice when it came to the notable perspective! Actually, Microsoft have blogged my solution twice without my requesting them to do so and many other sources such as "Dangerous Prototypes" have also published my work.

You can see in this article that Microsoft make the point that they and Arduino are not normally connected. Greg Duncan of Microsoft goes on to say ... "While I don't usually highlight Arduino related projects, since there's often little Microsoft relation"

However "cheap" internet links aside many teachers and professors have also written to me or published articles. I will attempt to include some links below this topic of these articles. I made a statement about the unique nature of my work, recently I achieved my first "hard copy" recognition in a published book by Jack Purdman. I do not know Jack but as you will read on his amazon page he is an accomplished and well regarded author of programming books. You can download beginning_c_for_arduino.pdf from www.it-ebooks.info and read the following on page 236. Jack contacted me to ask if he could publish this, he told me he would have made half the book about the debugger had the book not already reached such late stages of production.

The Arduino debugger from VisualMicro is actually a program add-in for Microsoft’s Visual Studio. The Visual Studio debugger is full featured with various debug windows, breakpoints, and single-stepping features. As you can see in the figures, the Arduino is completely integrated into the Visual Studio IDE. The first figure shows the ability to open an Arduino project from within Visual Studio while the second shows how there are combo boxes for the Arduino boards and COM port selection."

Okay I get the point :) I won't be writing about anything that I have done, I will leave that for others to report. However let me make the point that I am not trying to promote my work but simply to tell people with an interest in Arduino about something that makes their life easier. BUT I take the point and will only write or extend articles about other topics unrelated to myself. Hopefully at some future time an independent party will make an article that covers Visual Micro or the architecture of the debugger. Thanks for being attentive and providing this service
