Gainford Spa

[edit]

Gainford Spa is on the Banks of the River Tees at Gainford (near Darlington). It’s a natural spring that outlets sulphuric water from an artesian well. The well was found in the 1830’s when miners dug a borehole when they were looking for coal. It was at first called the Borehole Well but when a fountain head was put on in the 1840’s it was renamed Gainford Spa. Villagers would go down and drink the water straight from the spring. It is accessible via a path off a path on a lay-by on the road going to barnard castle. I’ve done videos of it on my YouTube channel Tees Cottage Guy.
