First Tham (譚) In Singapore

Mr Tham Hei Foon 譚喜歡 a.k.a. Tham Heng Wan (Date of birth unknown; died 14 Oct 1920) Profession: - Trader. Lived or worked at 5 Upper Circular Rd, Singapore. One of the 12 leader members of the Cantonese Committee responsible for the running of ‘Cantonese Free Hospital’ or Kwong Wai Shiu Hospital (see article on ‘The early beginnings of Kwong Wai Shiu Hospital’). The Cantonese Committee took over responsibility of the ‘Cantonese Free Hospital’ from the government in 1910. The committee consisted of men known for their philanthropic work.

Excerpt from ‘The Straits Times’ Page 6, 14 Oct 1920 Friends of Tham Heng Wan, Justice of Peace, assessor of income tax, member of the Chinese Advisory Board and of the Poh Leung Kuk Committee, otherwise known as Tham Hee Foon, will be sorry to learn of his death this morning. The funeral is fixed for Sunday the 17th inst.,leaving 11 Duxton Hill at 11 am. Tham Heng Wan leaves a widow, 5 sons, 5 daughters, 3 daughters-in-law and 5 grandchildren.
