Georgia CORE
[edit]Georgia CORE – the Center for Oncology, Research and Education is a nonprofit enterprise working to strengthen the quality of cancer care in Georgia[1]. Funded by the Georgia Research Alliance, Wilbur and Hilda Glenn Family Foundation, government grants, research contracts and private contributions[2], Georgia CORE marshals several cancer-focused entities into a single force to help Georgians fight the disease. Georgia CORE’s board of directors is composed of educators, nurses, scientists, and community oncologists[3].
In 2012, Georgia CORE launched the website GeorgiaCancerInfo.org, a website containing information about cancer care, clinical trials, oncologists, and treatment facilities in Georgia. The information on GeorgiaCancerInfo.org is updated by the National Cancer Institute and Georgia CORE’s network of researchers and affiliates[4]. Georgia CORE and the Georgia Research Alliance hosted a conference in November of 2012 entitled ‘Best and Promising Practices in Quality Cancer Care: Meeting 2012 Commission on Cancer Standards’. Representatives from Commission on Cancer accredited organizations in Georgia were invited to attend[5].
Georgia CORE and the Georgia Department of Public Health were awarded a three-year $900,000 grant from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention for an initiative called the Georgia Breast Cancer Genomics Education, Surveillance and Policy Program. The program focuses on education and screening among women ages 18 to 49[6].
