Question from Mehchris (07:46, 2 November 2023)[edit]

hi, please what are the basic editing skills i need to know? --Mehchris (talk) 07:46, 2 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

please am faced with a little situation over here, am exercising editing and i came across a block of text that when i read , it seems to be an advertisement which i think is not proper. we are wikipedia and this article do not stick with the rules. my question is 'what should i do with this?' please i need advice. Mehchris (talk) 14:52, 2 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Hi, @Mehchris; welcome to Wikipedia! The introduction should provide you with some information on basic editing skills. If you have encountered some text which seems to be purely promotional, you are more than welcome to remove it! If there is any information that is relevant to an encyclopedia and could be phrased neutrally, you could also rephrase the relevant information in a neutral tone and remove the promotional content. Hello[edit]

I received a note that you are my new mentor. I am grateful for your service to Wikipedia. It's a wonderful system with a lot of interesting properties.

Just to give you a sense of where I am at with Wikipedia right now. I had an ambition a while ago of doing some work on the Scientific Racism page. I learned a lot in the process but also learned that my idea of improving the page by adding information about Thomas Malthus did not easily align with the community. I like the idea of following through with the suggestion (originally from me) that the early history should be restructured in terms of themes rather than people, although when I started drafting such a revision it was harder than I expected. I should probably pick that up again though.

I also submitted a proposed page for author Allan Chase. I'd be happy to see that go live. I responded to the feedback from the reviewer, but they seem to have gone silent. JBradleyChen (talk) 02:36, 29 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, @JBradleyChen; welcome to Wikipedia! I think the help page Help:Wikipedia editing for researchers, scholars, and academics may have some useful information.
  • I do not have much personal background on Malthus or scientific racism, but, from a cursory reading of the discussions, I believe that the main point being made is that most of the literature does not directly link Malthus to scientific racism. A discussion of Malthus in the article would likely be unwarranted if existing sources do not make this connection. As other editors have mentioned Wikipedia does not allow original research, including analysis or synthesis of existing sources; I believe this is one of the more important differences between Wikipedia and academic writing.
  • As for the draft on Allan Chase, it is still awaiting review. Reviewers review drafts in no particular order, and drafts are not assigned to specific reviewers, so the previous reviewer is likely not still following this draft. I will take a look at the draft later, if I can find time.
Thank you for your contributions, and please let me know if you have any questions! Tol (talk | contribs) @ 21:24, 30 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you! The Chase article is now live, and I am happy about that.
Regarding Malthus, I did find another source for the influence of Malthus on Eugenics and Social Darwinism, but rather than fight that fight I would prefer to find a way to improve that page that might be more broadly welcomed, like a rewrite around themes instead of people. That is a lot of work though, so I'm not sure how to approach that yet. JBradleyChen (talk) 21:52, 6 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
No problem, @JBradleyChen! That sounds like it could be useful; you could potentially see if anybody is interested in collaborating on the talk. Good luck with your efforts! Tol (talk | contribs) @ 15:29, 7 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hello. I removed some sentences that were not neutral. I have also added additional sources. Look here please. 2A00:1FA1:2DB:61A8:99E5:AC3:60F0:D6F (talk) 10:00, 12 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, IP; taking a quick look over the draft, there are still neutrality problems. For example:
  • That Lectera is "operating worldwide in 5 languages" does not seem to be particularly relevant.
  • Mentioning that her "Instagram account ... has 5.5 million subscribers" has very little encyclopedic relevance.
  • Similarly, the list of awards does not seem particularly useful or relevant. As a general rule of thumb, I would advise that awards that are themselves notable tend to warrant inclusion, while those that are not notable likely do not warrant inclusion.
  • More statistics that aren't particularly relevant: "over 150 courses available", "teaches almost 3 million students from 60 countries", "average 86ย % course completion rate".
As the draft is currently, I do not think that the tone, strictly speaking, is problematic (promotional wording is not a major problem); rather, the neutrality problem is to do with the content (such as the focus on detailing awards and not-particularly-relevant statistics). Tol (talk | contribs) @ 06:00, 16 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the answer. I have corrected the comments. Please take a look. 2A00:1FA1:4232:88A0:B90A:1A5B:1383:112E (talk) 18:50, 16 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
There are still tone problems; some sections are not written with encyclopedic tone. I would also encourage you to avoid reliance on primary sources and provide more sources that clearly demonstrate notability. To quote the general notability guideline, this means that sources should demonstrate "significant coverage in reliable sources that are independent of the subject". (I am not familiar with the Russian language and so it is difficult for me to evaluate Russian sources โ€” if you believe the Russian sources are sufficient, please disregard.) Tol (talk | contribs) @ 17:13, 20 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the answer. There are enough Russian sources that cover her biography. These are detailed independent articles that are dedicated to a person. Regarding the tone of the article, could you help correct it? My English is not at the level of a native speaker, so it is very difficult for me to do this. I will be very grateful! 2A00:1FA1:388:A500:3418:8891:CC39:E5E3 (talk) 19:15, 23 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
No problem. I can take a closer look at the article and sources, and get back to you, but I'm a bit busy currently. I will try to get back to you by the end of the week. Tol (talk | contribs) @ 04:16, 29 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Hi; I have been busy, but I would like to keep you updated โ€” I did not have time to look at the draft over the weekend, but I should be able to do so by Tuesday. My apologies. Tol (talk | contribs) @ 05:24, 6 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Reviewing the article, I have the following suggestions:
  • Remove the nickname (?) "Smart", as it is not widely used to refer to her in reliable sources.
  • Remove the sentences on Lectera Corp and the WE Convention. They seem to be more related to Semeshkina's ventures than to herself specifically.
  • Remove the "Awards" section; none of the awards appear to have been notable.
  • Remove the "Title" section from the infobox; this parameter is used for formal or awarded titles.
If you make these changes, and ensure that the sources meet the notability guideline for people, I believe the draft will be in good shape. Tol (talk | contribs) @ 05:21, 8 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, @Javeria bilal, and welcome to Wikipedia. Wikipedia is a free encyclopedia, so it contains neutrally written encyclopedic articles on various notable topics, supported by reliable sources. There may be relevant information in our articles on the Israeliโ€“Palestinian conflict and/or the 2023 Israelโ€“Hamas war. If you have any questions about Wikipedia, please let me know.
