TOPIC: STRESS

1. Introduction

All over the world in life people facing challenges and obstacles, and sometimes the pressure is hard to handle. At times people feel overwhelmed, under the gun or unsure how to meet the demands placed on us, we experience stress. In small doses, stress can be good things but some people do not know about it. It can give us the push needed, motivating us to do our best, stay focused and alert. On this assignment will provide you with some basic information on stress and simple how to dealing with stress. It is not intended to take the place of advice from a physician or counsellor but rather to help you in decide on how to manage your stress and increase your well being.

2. What is a stress?

Stress is a psychological and physiological response to environment events that upset our personal balance in some way. When faced with a threat whether to our physical safety or emotional equilibrium, the body’s defences kick into high gear in a rapid automatic process known as the ‘’ fight-to- flight’’ response. The feeling we get from this stress response is heart pounding in the chest, muscles tensing up, breathes coming faster and every sense on high alert.

Another way to describe stress is the emotional and physical strains cause by our response to pressure from the outside world; thus it is the body’s way of responding to unexpected or nerve straining circumstances. Stress is caused by external forces that place tension on an object. Any demand or situation in the environment that requires a reaction from people is called a stressor. Stress is both good and bad for us.

3. Goodness of stress

The biological stress response is meant to protect and support us. It is what helped our ancestors who lived in an environment where there was no technology to cope and survive the life or death situation they regularly faced. We cannot exist without stress. Stress is the body’s response to a perceived threatening situation which protects us. Positive stress is allowing people to perform at higher level. The constructive solution to the problem can result in higher productivity. The workers who are always working under pressure they will result in increased productivity. It promotes personal growth and situation often force people to acquire new skills and develop new insights. Experience in dealing with stress can also result in the worker coping better with future stress. We have all heard of situations where individuals perform unimaginable feats of strength and courage to save the life of another person. This type of stress provides us with the extra physical and emotional resources needed when our life are in threatened.

On a small scale of good stress is creates great achievement. We can face and overcome all sorts of situation due to good stress. Although most interview situations involve a considerable amount of stress, certain jobs are performed under a great deal of pressure. Interviewers believe that stressful conditions should be simulated in order to assess the good candidates.

4. Badness of stress

Bad stress has reached epidemic proportion. Researchers shown that 90% of office visited can be attributed to how we perceive a situation. Even though we may not be presented with an actual physical threat our blood pressure rises, our heartbeat quickens and our breathing becomes more rapid and develop chronic stress. Chronic stress occurs when we are subjected to a host of perceived, constant and threats. Some of these can be driving in heavy traffic, debt, problems at home, problem in the workplace and unrealistic expectations. Chronic stress affects our organs and creates a magnitude of health problems.

Some impacts of chronic stress are heart attack, digestive problems, asthma, trouble breathing, ulcers, headaches, muscle tension and hair loss in women. It affects the regulation of insulin levels in your body which can lead to diabetes. Some symptoms of chronic stress are heart palpitation, shortness of breath, back or neck pains, insomnia, skin problem, fatigue, weight loss or gain and high blood pressure. The prolonged exposure to stress increase the risk of every things like obesity, infection to anxiety, depression and memory problems.

People under stress are making rash decisions. This proven by expertise that when people are under major stressful conditions, they tend to make bad decisions. For this situation seems to be without any solution the committing suicide occurs to their mind. Stress can also cause anger and this lead to uncontrolled behaviour to people.

  • 7. Ways of coping with stress

    Stress is undeniable damaging especially when it goes beyond your control. There are many things a person can do to control or reduce stress. Some ways of coping with stress are:

  • Information seeking
  • Job involvement
  • Organisation communication
  • Physical exercise
  • Relaxation
  • Expanding social support network
  • Spiritual prayer
  • Positive thinking
  • Good interpersonal relationship
  • 8. Conclusion

    Stress can be found at all levels of life and affects everybody in different ways. The stressor is any demand or situation in the environment that requires a reaction from people is a source of stress. Chronic stress may be associated with heart problems and high blood pressure. Management of stress may require more additional training and increasing communication. Stress does not always have negative impact but it can also have positive impact that contributes to our successful in life. ‘’TO AVOID STRESS BE POSITIVE ALWAYS AND STOP WORRY”
