AGENEBODE – No fewer than 3,000 persons in five villages displaced by flood in Agenebode, Etsako East Local Government Area of Edo State are desperately seeking relief and rehabilitation.

The flood emanating from the overflow of its bank by the River Niger had terribly devastated the coastal villages and completely destroyed food crops and animals as virtually everything was submerged in water except ducks which are naturally aquatic.

Villages mostly affected include Ekoakpele-Uzanu, Oguoyor-Uzanu, Ukpeko-Uzanu, and Ogberaya-Uzanu all affiliate suburbs of Agenebode where the level of water compelled the use of boats across the ravaged areas.Flood in Etsako

When The NIGERIAN OBSERVER visited the area, there was visible lamentations and gnashing of teeth by the affected victims following the huge loss of their property and means of livelihood, even as frantic efforts were being made to evacuate them from the troubled places by boat.

It was also discovered that temporary emergency camps have been opened for the victims to relocate for safety at the nearest points located at Uzanu in Agenebode and the other in a primary school at Adogu Station in Ajaokuta Local Government Area of Kogi State.

The only surviving structures in the area were two blocks of classrooms at the Migrant Fishermen Primary School, Ukpeko-Uzanu while every other building, mostly of mud, gave in to the flood, leaving the people without shelter.

The unfortunate victims have appealed to the state government for assistance, including well meaning Nigerians as their predicament grows by the day.

Chairman of the council, Engr. Peter Ojor Anyai described the situation as unfortunate, very pathetic and alarming.

He promised immediate intervention to alleviate the sufferings of the displaced persons, adding that the council would commence necessary assistance within limits of its resources, but noted that the disaster was beyond the scope of the council alone.

Engr. Anyai, however, advised victims taking refuge in far away Kogi State to relocate to the temporary camp at Agenebode to enable assistance to be extended to them.

The ravaging flood is also reported to have wreaked parts of Etsako Central, destroying farm lands and property.
