Answer to notability issue
[edit]Thanks for reviewing the article and suggesting improvements. Basically the notability problem is the same as for the last declination, though the article/references improved substantially. It is difficult to judge notability if one is passionate about a topic, I guess passion is one driving moment to create a wikipedia article. A conflict of interest might apply to me and "my article" (not mentioning the input and feedback I got for the drafts) as well.
As I am a trained scientist I fully support peer review and verifyability. So, I worked on that before resubmitting the article and I'd like to point out the article's skeleton of secondary sources:
- "History of Tararua Forest Park". Department of Conservation, NZ government
- Chris MacLean (December 1994). Tararua: The Story of a Mountain Range. Whitcombe Press. ISBN 978-0-473-02613-4.
- Ross Kerr (1995). A Chronology of the Tararua and Rimutaka Ranges. Ross Kerr Publications. ISBN 0-473-02962-6.
- Barnett, Shaun (2007). Shelter from the storm : the story of New Zealand's backcountry huts. Nelson, N.Z.: Craig Potton Pub. p. 151. ISBN 9781877517709.
- Beaglehole, Tim (2006). A Life of J. C. Beaglehole: New Zealand Scholar. Wellington: Victoria University Press. ISBN 9780864735355
most of them are used several times throughout the article.
Not included are address lists, foremost "Jim DuFresne (2006). Tramping in NZ, Lonely Planet, ISBN 1740597885", they would make up the majority of recent printed secondary sources, but do not count for the notability issue. Sadly (well, luckily as there were no dramatic accidents in the past decade) there are no national/international news items on the tramping club. Especially where publicity is often homemade, e.g with own websites, there is no need of creating media coverage. Notability can be seen from overseas exchange student reports being written on this club (not counting the facebook entries...). Examples:
- http://www.edu.uu.se/digitalAssets/121/121473_victoria-univ-of-wellington-2010.pdf
- http://www.ieconline.de/vorteil-auslandsstudium/erfahrungsberichte/fc/neuseeland/fu/victoria-university-of-wellington/f/88.html
- http://www.victoria-university-of-wellington.de/erfahrungen_auslandsstudium_neuseeland_studieren_neuseeland_studium.html
This club happens to have the university in its name, but the significance of this club is not limited to the university:
- The persistence of this club (92 years, that is about half of European-NZ existence) makes it a notable institution.
- This is the second oldest tramping club in NZ (just after the Tararua Tramping Club).
- Membership is not limited to university students/staff.
- Tramping (and the clubs) are part of kiwi culture.
- The club and its history is mentioned in several books dedicated to NZ tramping (see above).
Furthermore:
- US/British university sports teams are frequently granted an article.
- The existence of a Category:University outdoors clubs contradicts the general insignificance of university clubs.
Similar arguments of insignificance could apply to Canterbury University Tramping Club as well. However given the significance of tramping within kiwi culture/pasttime, more articles on tramping clubs would make sense. So I thought of starting with this one.
In deed, the article got fleshed out by an introduction, which has a single "insider" reference and a present activities section which I couldn't find recent secondary sources, I could use the first hand sources again, (1) captures it very well. The references in the publications section do not actually refer to the contents, but are prove of the mere existence of the publication.
Last but not least: The unprofessional layout of the VUWTC logo should not to be taken as a sign of insignificance of the club. The club's logo can be found in almost all hut-books in NZ, therefore well known by all trampers & mountaineers in NZ.
Finally, one can do so much for justification, but in the end it is the article which deserves the effort. I see three options:
- work on the style of some of the articles sentences,
- strip down the article to the bare skeleton - making it a stub, or
- forget about it.
Please let me know what you think is the best for this article. Vegetablesheep (talk) 21:41, 11 August 2013 (UTC)
- First of all, thank you for your contributions to this article and Wikipedia in general. Do you have any more references from major secondary sources that you could dig up (i.e. sources that are completely independent of the subject of the article and maybe even the field of tramping in general)? They would be invaluable for proving the notability of the subject; in fact, the relevant policy says that you should have such sources. After the addition of them, then the article would almost definitely get accepted. Thanks! APerson (talk!) 00:57, 12 August 2013 (UTC)
