Linked dates

[edit]

I reverted your unlinking of dates in the T. Boone Pickens, Jr. article. Linked dates allow user date preferences. See Wikipedia:MOSDATE#Date_autoformatting. --Elliskev 20:59, 8 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I had thought that linking dates just to have them formatted was just bad practice that had started to spread. I didn't realize that it was bad practice that had become policy.

Creating hot links just because you like the format seems terribly distracting to me. What is needed, I suppose, is a separate function that will format the date without creating a hot link.

I just looked at the Wikipedia:MOSDATE#Date_autoformatting page and it now discourages linked dates. The discussion of the autoformatting is heatedly against cluttering up articles with unneeded links. Is this a recent change?
