Hello, I have reverted your changes to this article, at least temporarily, as you appear to be breaking the rules of Wikipedia by removing hatnotes, references and introducing promotional material that may not belong on Wikipedia. Wikipeadia is an encyclopaedia, not for marketing or promotion of a company. I do see that you have made some valid changes (such as changing the CEO to Kate Swann) so I will attempt to rescue what content I can and re-add it to the article. Thanks. Stephenb (Talk) 16:02, 5 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

On second view, it seems you were copying material directly from [1] - you should beware that Wikipedia does not tolerate copyright violations, so please don't do it again. Thanks. Stephenb (Talk) 16:09, 5 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
They won't be:
Your account has been blocked indefinitely from editing Wikipedia because it appears to be mainly intended for publicity and/or promotional purposes. Please read the following carefully.
Why can't I edit Wikipedia?

Your account's edits and/or username indicate that it is being used on behalf of a company, group, webside or organization for purposes of promotion and/or publicity. The edits may have violated one or more of our rules on spamming, which include: adding inappropriate external links, posting advertisements, and using Wikipedia for promotion. Wikipedia has many articles on companies, groups, and organizations, but such groups are generally discouraged from using Wikipedia to write about themselves. In addition, usernames like yours are disallowed under our username policy.

Am I allowed to make these edits if I change my username?

Probably not. See Wikipedia's FAQ for Organizations for a helpful list of frequently asked questions by people in your position. Also, review the conflict of interest guidance to see the kinds of limitations you would have to obey if you did want to continue editing about your company, group, organization, or clients. If this does not fit in with your goals, then you will not be allowed to edit again. Consider using one of the many websites that allow this instead.

What can I do now?

If you have no interest in writing about some other topic than your organization, group, company, or product, you will probably not be allowed to edit Wikipedia again. Consider using one of the many websites that allow this instead.

If you do intend to make useful contributions about some other topic, you must convince a Wikipedia administrator that you mean it. To that end, please do the following:

  • Add the text {{unblock-spamun|Your proposed new username|Your reason here}} on your user talk page.
  • Replace the text "Your proposed new username" with a new username you are willing to use. See Special:Listusers to search for available usernames. Your new username will need to meet our username policy.
  • Replace the text "Your reason here" with your reason to be unblocked. In this reason, you must:
  • Convince us that you understand the reason for your block and that you will not repeat the edits for which you were blocked.
  • Describe in general terms the contributions that you intend to make if you are unblocked.
If you believe this block was made in error, you may appeal this block by adding the text {{unblock|Your reason here}} below but you should read the guide to appealing blocks first.

Request reason:

I am updating inaccurate information about WHSmith - not trying to promote or market anything. I work in the WHSmith press office and I have been asked to update the information - the text I am copying is from the WHSmith PLC website which I manage so have the right to copy

Decline reason:

If you really think that the text you added was something other than promotion, it's just another proof that your judgement in this area is compromised by conflict of interest. Also, the fact that you work for the copyright owner is not sufficient, see Donating copyrighted materials (but we will not accept this text anyway because it's not encyclopedic). Also, you will need to actually read you block message and follow its directions by choosing a different username and convincing us that unblocking you will benefit the encyclopedia, not your employer or anyone else. Here are a few key questions:

You are currently blocked because your username appears directly related to a company, group or product that you have been promoting, contrary to the username policy. Changing the username will not allow you to violate the 3 important principles above. Max Semenik (talk) 16:30, 5 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

If you want to make any further unblock requests, please read the guide to appealing blocks first, then use the {{unblock}} template again. If you make too many unconvincing or disruptive unblock requests, you may be prevented from editing this page until your block has expired. Do not remove this unblock review while you are blocked.

Also, I think you would have done better to review the policies and guidelines of Wikipedia before editing at all, as per the Welcome links above. Also, I don't quite believe you: you added spaces between the "W" and "H" in the article, and even the company's web site uses "WH Smith PLC" in its copyright, for instance. Note that I have changed the financial details (to the 2012 results) and CEO for you. Stephenb (Talk) 16:33, 5 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Request reason:

OK understood. I should have read the rules - how can I submit a request for some changes to be made? Namely there isnt a lot of info about the company over the past 8 years or so

You'll have to convince the project that you won't be editing any article in the future with which you have conflict of interest ... then we'll unblock, and show you where to change your username. Of course, seeing as you won't be able to promote, you'll definitely need to rethink whether you need an account on Wikipedia at all (✉→BWilkins←✎) 17:57, 5 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Request reason:

Hi thank you. I dont necessarily need to be unblocked - I dont intend to update any other articles. I woudl just like to be able to suggest some updates to the page. For example, it says that the company had difficulties in 2003/2004 which is absolutely true, however it doesnt go on to say that Kate Swann was appointed CEO in 2003 and she has focused on the company's core prodeuct categories making it very successful and profitable - making £102m profit in the last financial year

Request reason:

Hi again. I apologise for making edits to the page of the company i work for. I am new to wikipedia and, admitedly, did not read the rules. My aim is to make some slight improvements to the page, so that visitors can learn about the very recent history of WHSmith, namely since the appointment of Kate Swann in 2003 - given that she will be stepping down from the organisation next year, it seems correct to include a short summary of the work she has done. Can I be unblocked so that i can suggest some changes via the Talk page as the company's Wikipedia Chief? I promise I wont make any edits myself, just suggest some with relevant references of course to back up my suggestions. I am sorry again for not reading the rules and subsequently breaking them.

Looks like you still don't completely understand about WP:SPAM and WP:NPOV. And WP:COI. Peridon (talk) 11:40, 6 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

First, you are only permitted to have 1 active unblock request. Any additional "comments" should be simply done as comments. Second, the unblock templates you are using are inappropriate anyway: you were clearly advised that this userid may never be used on Wikipedia. You were advised that the correct template to use is {{unblock-spamun|Your proposed new username|Your reason here}}. Third, in that "Your reason here" you need to prove that you're not going to spam or violate COI - although some of your proposed changes are ok, you then go into details that include spam/WP:PROMO. If you are permitted to change your username, you ARE permitted to suggest changes on the article talkpage in order to obtain WP:CONSENSUS for them when it comes to articles with which you have WP:COI. Any future unblock request that does NOT show us that you have even taken a cursory glance at WP:GAB will result in this talkpage being locked for abusing the unblock process (✉→BWilkins←✎) 10:42, 10 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
