47 in Nalik[edit]

Hello! I happened to come across your page and saw that you speak a little Nalik. Can you perhaps tell me how one would say "forty-seven" (47) in this language? I'm collecting that number in all languages, Nalik would be #585 in my list. I hope they actually have numbers going that high... tenkyu tru! — N-true 03:17, 30 January 2007 (UTC)

Could you please write a stub - just a few sentences based on ? Only 3-5 sentences enough. Please.

PS. Article about Kurów is already on 175 languages. If you do that, please put interwiki link into English version. If your village/town/city isn't yet on PL wiki, I can do article about it. (I'm first author of requests) Pietras1988 TALK 17:44, 30 April 2007 (UTC)

Very thx. You are great! Pietras1988 TALK 12:19, 1 May 2007 (UTC)

PNG Portal[edit]

Just so you know, Portal:Papua New Guinea has a maintainer now. Aliasd 11:05, 18 May 2007 (UTC)

Great stuff. I took a look a couple of days ago - it's been sorely in need of some effort for a while now. Good on you! Wantok 11:32, 18 May 2007 (UTC)

Infobox PNG Place[edit]

Could I get some feedback from you on Template talk:Infobox_PNG_Place#New_Map? I think I have a good new map this time for the Infobox, and I want all the other kids to think its cool before I go ahead and put it out there. Aliasd 12:54, 29 May 2007 (UTC)

With your blessing, I would like to nominate you for sysop privileges on English Wikipedia. I believe you are a well experienced editor, and even though your edit count is a bit low, your edits have always been well thought out, well commented, and strictly adhere to Wikipedia policy. Furthermore, your account dates back 4 years, you are an active and important contributor to multiple Wikiprojects, and, importantly, you are constantly detecting and reverting bad edits and vandalism with dead accuracy in many articles that relate strictly to your personal experience. Being a person who has come head to head with you in disputes before, I can vouch for the fact that your treatment towards other Wikipedia users is courteous, adheres to policy, and is incredibly diplomatic and thoughtful. I think you would be a great admin, and I would be delighted if you would allow me to nominate you. Aliasd 05:52, 12 June 2007 (UTC)

  • Thanks, indeed, for your kind words. I am humbled. I would be delighted to take on admin duties... en-Wikipedia is something I care greatly about. And (since I find it very difficult to accept praise without returning it) may I say what a superb job you've been doing on PNG articles of late - the sheer volume and quality of your input has been an inspiration. Wantok 01:29, 13 June 2007 (UTC)
    • Thankyou for the returned kind words. PNG is such an underdocumented place, and really needs allt he attention it can get. Aliasd 09:06, 13 June 2007 (UTC)
    • Please accept your nomination and review your questions here Aliasd 09:04, 13 June 2007 (UTC)
      • Done. Thanks - this will be an interesting process, even if the nom is not successful. I've been involved in article deletion/rename debates before, but not admin debates. Wantok 13:56, 13 June 2007 (UTC)
        • Someone left a new question for you on your RfA page. Hang in there man, and remember what Jimbo says, "its not a big deal(tm)" :) its just a pity you got that initial wave of opposers in the first couple hours, but people are starting to jump the fence now, so you may be still in with the slightest chance! :) Aliasd 22:53, 14 June 2007 (UTC)
          • It certainly looks to me as if the nom will fail, but that's fine; it's an interesting process to go through nonetheless. Wantok 02:20, 15 June 2007 (UTC)
            • Well, as much of a disappointment that would be for me, I know you would only take the positives of this little experience away with you.... and if you fail I hope your next nomination goes much better. I still have hopes however, as the oppose team (with respect) seems to mostly be concerned with edit counts, not integrity or demonstrated responsibility, knowledge of policy, etc. Over the next couple of days, you should hopefully see an influx of support. Many successful nominees I guess have a pre-existing network of peers that support a nomination, and the fact that you aren't some sort of WP social club member has probably hurt your nom here too... All in all, however, I believe its not all over for your nom just yet, as your responses to the questions were very good and your RfA places a very good argument for sysop. Aliasd 02:57, 15 June 2007 (UTC)

Question on RFA[edit]

Back to work[edit]

Was already there
File:Flag of Bougainville.png
The png I knew about

I am looking at compiling a bunch of svgs of PNG political flags, do you know if images of these flags existing in the public domain at all already? I have found good graphics of PNG flags [1] and hope to use these as a reference, but I don't want to repeat work that has already been done. Also, I want to work some more on refining my cartography. I have some new maps on my images page which I have used to illustrate some aussie articles. They arent amazing, but I know I can do much better. Can you think of some PNG or MEL related maps that I should apply myself to? I want to draw some without a sat overlay. Aliasd

  • You mean the provincial flags? One site that appears fine from a copyright point of view is FOTW: "Flags of the World is produced and maintained by an Editorial Staff of unpaid volunteers and the contents of these pages are offered freely to the Internet community." Quality is mixed but at least some are usable. Re maps... well, the obvious missing link now is more detailed maps of each province, for the province articles. Great stuff - I love doing carto image work myself, but haven't for ages (apart from that recent thing for the infobox). Wantok 03:48, 15 June 2007 (UTC)
    • Sorry, must be half asleep, yea, provincial flags. I should reconstruct these images, as they should be SVG. Aliasd 03:59, 15 June 2007 (UTC)
I made this svg today of the Bougainville flag not knowing a svg existed of it! now WP has 2 :) Not bad for a first effort tho! will work on more when I have the time. I think my colours and scale however might be more 'correct' Aliasd 10:16, 15 June 2007 (UTC)
I have made svgs of Simbu and Central provinces... Watch my Images page for further updates. Aliasd 01:22, 16 June 2007 (UTC)
Well done! They look very good indeed. Wantok 01:48, 16 June 2007 (UTC)
My last effort on East New Britain was very time consuming, and it was difficult to get good refs on how to actually construct it. the Eastern Highlands flag was also difficult and I am dreading some of the upcoming ones! if you have some spare time, feel free to fix some of these flags up, the SVG format should make it easy to do. Aliasd 09:55, 17 June 2007 (UTC)
12 down, 8 to go! Aliasd 06:33, 18 June 2007 (UTC)
Great stuff. I've been keeping an eye on progress... wish I had time to help at the moment but I don't. You've been burning the midnight oil alright! Wantok (talk) 07:08, 18 June 2007 (UTC)

Your RfA[edit]

Hi Wantok, I'm sorry to let you know that your RfA did not pass this time. Remain active at Wikipedia, do your best work, read the reasons given by those who opposed you this time out, and you may very well succeed in the future, as many other current admins have. -- Cecropia 14:03, 20 June 2007 (UTC)

  • Thanks, I will take that advice - one of the best things about this process is the encouragement in the oppose comments. Mark of a mature and supportive community, in my book. Regards, Wantok (talk) 00:50, 21 June 2007 (UTC)
It was bloody close though, sheer numbers did it for you, cant really pas an adminship with 50+% on oppose :( sorry man, the real pity is if you do come back in 3 months or so like they ask, you still probably wont have the high edit counts some of them are looking for, although, this experience has taught me a thing or two as well. I should be able to put the case across more convincingly in the future, and next time, I am sure you will succeed. Aliasd 14:56, 20 June 2007 (UTC)
  • Well, thanks again for the nomination, and your excessive praise therein :) It was an interesting process, and I've learned a lot too. I'm quite content with the result - it's "no big deal", per Jimbo, as you mentioned. Wantok (talk) 00:50, 21 June 2007 (UTC)
I am sorry your RFA did not pass. Better luck next time! Politics rule 18:02, 20 June 2007 (UTC)
  • Thanks indeed. I'm not at all concerned with the result, just glad to have been through the process. Cheers! Wantok (talk) 00:50, 21 June 2007 (UTC)

I created Template:Infobox Papua New Guinea Province, and cant get it to size right (see Western Province (Papua New Guinea) you any good with infoboxes? Also, check out North Fly District, Western Province, been busy! Aliasd 13:49, 21 June 2007 (UTC) (note) someone else fixed it, looks awesome! Aliasd 13:57, 21 June 2007 (UTC)

  • Nicely done - you've been on fire recently, a prodigious amount of work, great stuff! Wantok (talk) 02:05, 22 June 2007 (UTC)
    • Thanks for the kind words! The Infobox, however, needs to be incorporated into as many provincial articles as possible fairly quickly, otherwise it will be nominated for deletion! Aliasd 03:03, 22 June 2007 (UTC)
      • OK, I'll tackle the Islands Region initially then, if you like... Was wondering about Districts in the infobox - any particular reason for that? Another option might be electorates. Wantok (talk) 04:08, 22 June 2007 (UTC)
        • sounds like a good idea, I included districts in the infobox because i intend to create an article on all the districts.... and there arent too many for each province (8 max i think, some about 3) thanks for that, I will try and get through the highlands, see if we meet somewhere :) I also created a district infobox if you want to use that... Aliasd 06:39, 22 June 2007 (UTC)

You interested in helping to document the districts, towns, and llgs in nip if i create some maps and stubs to start you off? Aliasd

  • Most definitely! Wantok (talk) 04:03, 24 June 2007 (UTC)
  • Done! Aliasd 02:10, 25 June 2007 (UTC)
  • Sorry this didnt get done sooner when you had a weekend to look at it.... Some of my normal sources didn't cover New Ireland, and a lot of my work had to be rechecked and verified and researched etc, but I am pretty happy with the result. The maps look cool, and remember, they are svg, so if anything ever needs to be changed it can be done! Aliasd 06:54, 25 June 2007 (UTC)

Tok Pisin Wikipedia and Wiktionary[edit]

Good morning.

First off, I'm proceeding under the assumption that you are the same person as TPI User:"Mattandrews", since the profiles are quite similar.  If not, then my apoligies for calling you "Matt" in my 'vote' for your being granted Administrator permissions.

Because of my recent work to revitalize and reorganize the TOK Pisin (TPI) Wikipedia and Wiktionary, I was truly disappointed that your request to be granted Administrator permissions was turned down. You, Aliasd, Tim mcready, Caffelice (if still around) and others who are participants in the WikiProject Melanesia can be a great help in getting those two moribund Wikis up and running again, especially if you had been granted Administrator privileges.

The two TPI Wikis have been virtually abandoned since they were originally set up by a Foundation developer, and user Caffelice.  Nothing of any significance has been done to the Wikis for over a year and a half now.  By analogy, the two Wikis are like untended, overgrown ailan garden plots whose boundaries were laid out with a stick, a few yams planted to get the garden started.  But after those initial efforts the gardens have been forgotten.  Untended, with no new yams planted, weeds (spam, vandalism, bots and unrelated articles) have sprung up.  To make the garden viable now, it has to be laid out anew, and with much greater thought and precision.  The 'weeds' have to be dug up and removed, the old 'yams' trimmed or moved, and new 'yams' have to be planted.  And before all that occurs, a great deal of thought has to be given to who the beneficiaries of the revitalized gardens are going to be, and what types of 'yams' and other garden products would they prefer to have grown in their garden.

I've outlined the major part of my objectives for the TPI Wikipedia and Wiktionary in User:Mattandrews' talk page in the TPI Wikipedia.  If you haven't already looked at it, I'd really appreciate your doing so and giving me your ideas and comments, either here, on my talk page, or my user talk page in the TPI Wikipedia.

And then as a final thought, how do you feel about me creating a "Tok Pisin" sub-page on the WikiProject Melanesia page to discuss ideas and concepts about revitalizing the two Wikis, and for discussion about Tok Pisin-related matters in general?  Do you think there's enough interest now (or to be generated) by so doing?

Thanks/very best regards. K. Kellogg-Smith 11:25, 1 July 2007 (UTC)

  • Excellent move. Yes, that's me - linked from my user page here. Nice garden metaphor :) I've had the dire state of these two on my mind for a while, and just haven't had time to really address it. I will respond more fully on the tpi pedia. And yes, a Tok Pisin sub-page on WP Melanesia is a good idea. Cheers, Wantok (toktok) 02:57, 2 July 2007 (UTC)

Thank-you for yet again fixing another one of my templates. I always stuff up somewhere, and its reassuring to see you get in there within hours to submit the little buggers to your great QA process. As they say, possibly a little much, keep up the good work! aliasd·U·T 03:25, 11 July 2007 (UTC)

PNG Scouting![edit]

Hi! Wow, that was fast! Basically the articles need in Tok Pisin:

  • the name Girl Guides Association of Papua New Guinea
  • the name The Scout Association of Papua New Guinea
  • the names of the Programme Sections
    • Junior Scouts
    • Scouts
    • Senior Scouts
  • and the Scout Motto Be Prepared

would be great! Thank you so much! Chris 05:45, 13 July 2007 (UTC)

  • Hmm, well I could translate them, but there are several different ways they could be expressed, and it would probably be best to use the version that is actually used by the associations themselves in PNG. Do you have any contact with the organisations that might reveal this? Wantok (toktok) 13:34, 13 July 2007 (UTC)
heh I was a scout in PNG when I was a kid, I seem to remember it all being in english :) aliasd·U·T 06:38, 22 July 2007 (UTC)

Thanks! You are my new Tok Pisin and PNG hero!!--Sonjaaa 21:37, 17 July 2007 (UTC)

Michael Somare[edit]

Greetings. Re: The material you deleted on, I assume, the grounds that it might be libellous. Defamation is by definition untrue and truth is an absolute defence in an action in libel or slander. The reporting of the episode regarding Somare and Gabriel Dusava selling PNG passports in Hong Kong and mining licences in both Hong Kong and Singapore, representing Somare as the King of Papua New Guinea and proferring the K50 note with his picture on it as evidence, was reported on the front pages of both The National and the Post-Courier, as footnoted in the material you deleted. There was never any retraction of the stories or apology by either paper, nor did the Somares formally protest. The fact that the stories were never followed up and that there was no editorial commentary and no letters to the editor published had to do with private overtures by the Somares as to the practical consequences for both papers if the stores were proceeded with. However, this need not concern Wikipedia or its editors, who are obviously beyond the reach of such threats. The issue is whether there is any actionable defamation and there is not. The material should be restored, and subject to any further matters which you may know of which bear on the subject, I shall do so once you have responded to these comments. Masalai 04:53, 19 July 2007 (UTC)

  • No, the issue is not just whether there is actionable defamation. Please acquaint yourself with WP:LIVING. Wantok (toktok) 05:04, 19 July 2007 (UTC)

Translation Help[edit]

I was wondering if you would translate this song that a native PNG wrote for some volunteers that were there with him. I have tried using a Tok Pisin to English dictionary, but some of it isn't making sense. It comes from the the clip at this web address:

Here are the words in Tok Pisin:

mi wanpela wok man long Japan

na mi wok insai long kantri PNG

mi wanpela wok man long Japan

na mi wok insai long kantri PNG

mi stap na mi lukim Papua Niugini

em i gutpela kantri

kantri bilong mi Japan

laik Japan na mipela l latu bilong Papua Niugini na olgeta kantri

Olsem na mi hamamas na mi singim song olsem

Also, there is a website with this comic regarding Malaria. I was wondering what it means as well. It's a bit hard to see, but if you can zoom in you can see the words. The website is: [3]

Here are the words in Tok Pisin:

I'm not sure if all of that makes sense to you, because some of the words were difficult to read and were blurry. Hopefully I came up with the right thing. The (??) is where I had no clue what letters were there, because it looks as if some have disappeared. Anyway, if you can help me with the translation of all of these things, I will really appreciate it. I don't have enough skill to figure out the phrases, which really aren't found in the dictionaries, only works. When piecing the words together it doesn't come out quite right. Thanks so much,

  • Glad to help. The song translates as:
I am a worker from Japan
And I work in PNG
I am a worker from Japan
And I work in PNG
I am here and I see Papua New Guinea
It is a good country
My country is Japan
And Japan is a brother to Papua New Guinea and all countries
So I am happy and I sing this song

(one line of the Tok Pisin above was wrong - the words in the video were na Japan emi brata tu bilong Papua Niugini na olgeta kantri rather than laik Japan na mipela l latu bilong Papua Niugini na olgeta kantri).

The malaria awareness comic goes like this:

Frame 1: Mother says "Aiyee! Alex's head is as hot as a fire. What's causing this illness, Sister?"
Frame 2: Sister says "When a mosquito bites you, a parasite goes into your blood." Parasite says "I'm arriving at a new place now!"
Frame 3: Sister says "It breeds and many more appear..." Mother parasite says "My family is getting big." Baby parasite says "This person's blood is tasty, like tinned fish."
Frame 4: Sister says "These parasites eat your blood and make the child sick..."
Frame 5: Sister says "If the parasite stays, the child will die..."
Frame 6: Sister says "Luckily we have a medicine which kills these parasites"
Frame 7: Sister says "But if you drink the medicine just once, it won't be able to kill all the parasites and the sickness will stay..." Medicine says "My work is finished now..." Parasite says "He he, I will breed and there will be many more parasites..."
Frame 8: Sister says "So Alex must drink the medicine three times. Now, tomorrow and the day after tomorrow." Alex says "The medicine doesn't taste good." Mother says "Oiyo, his skin is starting to cool down again now."

Cheers, Wantok (toktok) 00:55, 20 July 2007 (UTC)

Thank you SO much! You're a lifesaver!

The content was a verbatim copy of the Ethnologue article, as I recall, and that is what my deletion summary was. I could look into it later (or e-mail you the text if you specify an e-mail address) but I don't think I would have deleted it if it didn't need to be completely rewritten.
