Testing
[edit]
DNA ANXIETY
Paul is anxious. He has been waiting for the results of his first DNA test for two days. He took it using YOUR DNA, a Silicon Valley online platform that offers tests that can be used to predict your risk of developing certain diseases, and whether your genetics can save you money on your insurance coverage. Paul picks a direct-to-consumer genetic testing platform because he wants to know ahead of time what his health risks will look like before he commits to a test with his insurance company. He also wants to save money on his insurance.
Several online insurance companies have been offering genetic tests to their customers for years, but only recently have they started to offer discounts to people whose genetics indicate they are at low risk for developing certain health issues or engaging in risky behaviour. Paul has always been reluctant to take the tests offered by insurance companies. He fears that if the data were stolen, it could reveal his identity, his family's identity, and even his children's genetic code, and he would have to deal with the consequences of identity theft, fraud, and extortion. He also has read that a criminal group was able to produce fake DNA to deceive DNA tests and mislead police investigations at crime scenes. In fact, there are even kits that produce fake DNA at home for less than $100. He also has read that insurance companies have been using genetic tests to deny coverage to people who are at high risk for developing certain diseases.
Paul had always been reluctant to take genetic tests offered by insurance companies. But this time, the potential savings and benefits were significant, so he decided to go ahead with the test since he could access personalized medical services free of charge through his insurance company. He also wanted to get a discount on his insurance.
Paul is relieved when he finally receives an email. He opens it.
"Hey, it's my DNA results," he said. "Finally."
When he looks at the results, it seems like everything is fine. He is relieved.
Suddenly, he receives another email from YOUR DNA. Paul thinks to himself, "What is this? An insurance offer?" He opens the email.
Upon opening the email he exclaims, "Wow! YOUR DNA is offering me a policy that is 30% cheaper than the cost of my current coverage. I am going to save a lot of money!"
