Summary of Articles

[edit]

Rococo or, late baroque, was the start of type artists having fun with their designs. It was created during the 18th century, and was now total works of art. This included sculptures, paintings, etc. This style was largly associated with the reign of Louis XV and Louis XVI.

Rococo comes from the combination of the French words rocaile which means stones and coquilles which meant shells. Some interpreted the term as an irregular shaped shell. When originally introduced in English the style received harsh criticism. It is now looked at as a major part of European art.

William Carlson is a type designer from the 18th century. He was born in Worcestershire. In the early 1700s he had started a business for gunsmithing. With the help of William Bowyer, Caslon was influenced to pick up type designing. His type became one of the most famous in England.

Caslon’s type was influenced by the prior head type of England, Dutch Baroque. His type became so popular it was starting to be used in important American documents. This includes the United States Declaration of Independence.
