Van Renesse is an old Dutch aristocratic family that stems from the town of Renesse in Zeeland.
History
There is some debate regarding the origin of the family; some historians claim that they are the Renesse family was a branch of the German Sayn dynasty.[citation needed] The family played an important role as lords and guardians of the Castle of Moermond in Zeeland, the Netherlands.[citation needed] The oldest members of the van Renesse family appeared in the 13th century. In the course of Dutch history, the family played a prominent role.[citation needed] The Walloon branch van Renesse van Elderen and a German branch von Renesse survived until modern times.[citation needed]
