Francisco Vieira de Matos, better known as Vieira Lusitano (4 October 1699 – Lisbon, 1783), was a Portuguese court painter and engraver.

Studies

He twice (first time between 1712–1719, second time around 1721–1728) visited Rome and studied with the Roman painters Benedetto Luti and Francesco Trevisani.

Court Painter

Joseph I

He first became a Portuguese Court painter during the reign of Joseph I of Portugal, when he famously painted Portraits for his three eldest daughters (Maria Francisca Isabel, Princess of Brazil, Mariana Francisca Josefa, Maria Francisca Doroteia) and his son-in-law (Pedro, Prince of Brazil). These paintings, and subsequent others, would gain him prestige in the court and in Europe.

Maria I

Maria I of Portugal kept him on as a court painter, but he lost his prestige and importance during this time, with an influx of new and younger painters.
