Vinod Sukumaran[1] is an Indian film maker and Film Editor. He has won the National Film Award for Best First Non-Feature Film of a Director for the film Diary of a Housewife (2001)
He is an alumnus of the Film and Television Institute of India. He has won Kerala state Film Award as Best Editor for the Malayalam film Ore Kadal, Ore Kadal(Kerala state Film Awards) directed by Shyamaprasad[2][better source needed](film maker) in 2007 and Ivan Megharoopan directed by P.Balachandran[3]. He did his first feature film Haram(film)[4] in 2015.
Personal life
Vinod Sukumaran[5] was born on 20 January at Palakkad district of Kerala, as the youngest son of Mr. K. Sukumaran (Retd. Head Post Master) and Mrs. M. Karthiyani (Ex. Panchayath Member, Kavassery II Village). After completing his degree (BTA) in Theatre Arts from the School of Drama and Fine Arts, Thrissur, Calicut University, in 1989, he joined the Film and Television Institute of India,Pune in 1992, where he earned his diploma in Film Editing. His first independent work as an editor was the FTII diploma film Veg or Non-Veg (1993), was directed by the Director/Actor Mr. Gurpal Singh and the film was screened in Edinburgh Film Festival in 1994. Vinod Sukumaran has had long association with the well-known film editor Late. Ms. Renu Saluja as her assistant editor around four years (1995-1999). His first directorial venture, a short film Diary of a House Wife, won the National Award in 2002 for the Best first film of a Director in non-fiction category. This film was screened in competition section of Mumbai International Film festival (MIFF 2002), World Cinema Section of International Film Festival of Kerala(IFFK2002), Asian Cinema Section of Commonwealth Film Festival Manchester (CFF 2002), River to River Florence-India Film Festival in Italy 2002, National Film festival organised by Kerala State Chalachitra Academy in 2003. Twice he has received £1000 seed grant for 90-second-long theme based promotional film script from The Royal Commonwealth Society as part of COMMONWEALTH VISION AWARD in 2003 and 2005. He has achieved Mathrubhumi film award as best film editor for AKALE, a Malayalam feature film directed by Shyamaprasad in 2005 and best film editor award for the same film in same year from Kerala state Film Critic Association.
Apart from working as Director, Editor, Sound Designer, Online Producer and conducting Theatre workshops, Vinod Sukumaran has chaired as NETPAC Jury member of All Light International Film festival held in Hyderabad in 2016, Jury Member of International Documentary & Short film festival of Kerala (IDSFFK) in 2016, Jury Chairman of Kerala State TV award for 2013, NETPAC Jury Chairman of All Light International Film festival[6] of Kerala in 2015. His first feature film was HARAM[7] the Malayalam film acted by the Fahad Fasil[8][better source needed] and Radhika Apte[9] in lead roles.
