Waukesha West High School is one of three high schools located in Waukesha, Wisconsin. The high school was established in 1993.

Academics

Art

The department provides a foundation in photography, drawing, painting, and ceramics, while performance art, installation art, video art, and other media forms are explored. An art show occurs every year, and in the 2005-2006 school year, the department hosted its first art sale, which included the sale of student and professional artists' works.

Music

The Concert Choir has performed at the Wisconsin State Capitol in Madison and has opened for the Nordic Choir and Lawrence Choir. The Concert Choir and Master Singers from West's Choir Department performed at the Viking Festival in the 2004-2005 school year. In 2005-2006, the Concert Choir placed first for all groups (Jazz, Concert Choir, and Treble) at the San Diego Heritage Festival and moved on to national competition. In 2006, they recorded a Christmas CD called Carols of Christmas. In 2008, they were invited to sing in an NCACDA convention in Fargo, North Dakota. The other choirs of Waukesha West are Treble Choir and Varsity Choir.

Extra-curricular activities

Academic Decathlon

Waukesha West's Academic Decathlon team has won the state competition and advanced to nationals every year between 2002 and 2012.[1] As a Division II school in 2002, the team won the national championship, scoring 48,871 points out of a possible 60,000, almost 600 points ahead of another AcDec power, Moorpark High School.

The school placed third or better at the nationals competition every year between 2002 and 2009, and finished fourth in 2010. The team has been the highest-scoring Division II school each year in that time (except for 2006, when they were classified as Division I). The school has also been the national runner-up three times, finishing second to Moorpark in 2003, 2008, and 2009.[2]

At the 2008 National Championship, Moorpark and Waukesha West achieved the two highest team scores ever recorded at any AcDec competition, with 53,119 and 53,096 points respectively. The 23-point margin of victory for Moorpark was worth approximately a single question.[3]

Marching band

Waukesha West High School's marching band, The Cadets of Waukesha West, have won the Wisconsin State Music Association (WSMA) marching band competition seven times, in 1997, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2004, 2005 and 2006.
