Wikipedia:Bait-and-switch
Appearance
This is an essay. It contains the advice or opinions of one or more Wikipedia contributors. This page is not an encyclopedia article, nor is it one of Wikipedia's policies or guidelines, as it has not been thoroughly vetted by the community. Some essays represent widespread norms; others only represent minority viewpoints. |
The old bait-and-switch is near ubiquitous on Wikipedia. We tell editors to be bold and then we criticize their contributions and tell them to be careful. We advertise ourselves as a community, but it's unlikely you'll make any friends on Wikipedia given that it's an encyclopedia, not a disco or a house party. We ask that individuals volunteer to do unpaid work creating an encyclopedia, but for every one compliment or "thanks" you get about nine complaints and insults.
If you're looking for the discount on a friendly collaborative community dedicated to knowledge and civility that we advertised Wikipedia as, sorry, we're all out of those, but we do have some other things at full price.
