Discussion
[edit]Read only bots do not need approval. Just use the API (mw:API:Main page) to gather the data that you need --Chris 04:46, 27 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, but when I try to connect (via pywikipediabot script) I get something like this:
Your username is not listed on [[[u'Wikipedia:Bots/Status', 'BotS']]]. Please make sure you are allowed to use the robot before actually using it!
How should I register my bot? --Nurutdinov
- I don't use pywikipedia, but you should be able to override that check somehow. Otherwise, just alter the code to remove it. --Chris 16:00, 27 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
- It would be much more easier for me if you just approved my bot. Moreover, using pywikipedia (for any purpose) is completely impossible without logging in. It is not about "altering" a piece of code, it is about writing a Wikipedia parser myself, and it is a great deal. --Nurutdinov
- No, its a pretty simple change. As far as I can see, all you need to do is comment out one line in login.py (see my patch, line 69). --Chris 17:00, 27 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
- Well, I was wrong. It works now, thanks a lot! I withdraw the bot. --Nurutdinov

- You could allow me to use a bot during a trial period at least. It is the easiest way to extract data for my research. --Nurutdinov
- A trial period doesn't grant the bot flag anyway. As Chris says, you don't need a bot flag for reading from API; in fact you don't even need to login. — HELLKNOWZ ▎TALK 17:23, 27 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
