Automatic or Manual: Automatic
Programming language(s): Python
Source code available: Pywikipedia with custom code
Function overview: Add an edit notice to articles which use a particular english variation.
Links to relevant discussions (where appropriate): Wikipedia:Bot requests/Archive 41/Archives/ 24#Bot to create edit notices for British English articles, Wikipedia:Templates for discussion/Log/2011 May 2#Template:Use British English
Edit period(s): Somewhere between weekly and monthly
Estimated number of pages affected: 4,073
Exclusion compliant (Y/N): Yes, although it would only be affected by {{bots}} templates on edit notice pages, which are probably not common.
Already has a bot flag (Y/N): Yes
Function details: The bot finds talk pages of articles which warn users that the associated article uses a particular English variation. A list will be kept of which articles use which variation. As long as the engvar notice remains on the talk page of the article for a significant amount of time (probably longer than a week, to prevent the bot from acting on articles where consensus may not be clear and/or edit warring over the english variation is occuring), then the bot will create an edit notice for the associated article, warning all editors that the article uses an english variation. In the case that the article already has an edit notice page, the bot will add the warning if it is not already there, or it will skip the article and flag it for manual follow-up inspection later. Specifically, the bot will be checking the following categories:
- Category:Articles which use American English
- Category:Articles which use Australian English
- Category:Articles which use British English
- Category:Articles which use British English Oxford spelling
- Category:Articles which use Canadian English
- Category:Articles which use Hiberno-English
- Category:Articles which use Indian English
- Category:Articles which use New Zealand English
- Category:Articles which use Pakistani English
- Category:Articles which use Philippine English
- Category:Articles which use Scottish English
- Category:Articles which use South African English
- Category:Articles which use Trinidadian English
Discussion
[edit]As noted at Wikipedia:Bot requests/Archive 41/Archives/ 24#Bot to create edit notices for British English articles, I'm unconvinced that this is a good idea. Regardless, TeleComNasSprVen has suggested that the same effect could be achieved via a much simpler method not requiring the use of a bot. —David Levy 22:30, 2 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
