National Archives Collaboration of the Month

[edit]
Wikipedia and the National Archives, together!

Each month, we will select an article related to a National Archives document to collaborate on. The purpose of this is to increase the quality of content, as well as to build connections between Wikipedians and archives staff. For textual documents, a goal of the collaboration will also be to have the document transcribed and validated on Wikisource by the month's end, as well.

This is a collaboration between NARA and Wikipedia, as well as between Wikipedians.

How does it work?

In most respects, this is a standard article collaboration. However, there are a few aspects where the National Archives will be assisting Wikipedians in their work:

  • At the start of the month, a relevant National Archives subject expert will provide a review of the article in its current state, if it exists, and suggest possible sources and avenues for improvement.
  • NARA will also ensure that a high-resolution scan of the document is uploaded to Commons.
  • We will also upload any relevant NARA publications or videos related to the document.
  • After the month is over, the participating NARA staff member will give the article a second review, to assess the work done.
  • NARA staff will be encouraged to participate in the editing, but we can make no guarantees.
  • If an article eventually reaches good or featured article status, the main author(s) will win a prize from the National Archives.
