From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Objective: To use images from Penn in Hand (Penn’s digitized manuscript collections) to populate relevant entries in Wikipedia.

Penn in Hand identifies manuscripts by a number of different topics (called "facets"), many of which align with entries in Wikipedia. Some of these broad facets include:

Language Century Genre Subject Geography Author Related names (e.g., former owner, transcriber, scribe)

After logging into Wikipedia, go to Penn in Hand.

You will want to spend some time looking through the facets, and searching for relevant entries in Wikipedia which could benefit from images of our materials. Once you have found one, download the image from Penn in Hand by right-clicking (or ctrl-clicking on a Mac) on the image, and selecting “Save Image As” from the menu. The image will automatically save as “resolver.jpg”, you will want to save it with a meaningful file name. I recommend using the manuscript shelfmark followed by the folio or page number, e.g. the image shown here would be named:

MsCodex33-16.jpg

This page would be named:

LJS37-7v.jpg

Upload the saved image to Wikimedia Commons using the upload wizard.

Then embed the images in the Wikipedia entry using the instructions at this link.
