#1Lib1Ref

[edit]

"Imagine a world where every Librarian added one more reference to Wikipedia."

#1Lib1Ref 2021 Poster. State Library of Queensland Wikipedia editing drop in sessions.

Each year State Library of Queensland contributes to Wikipedia's global campaign #1Lib1Ref (One Librarian, One Reference).

The #1Lib1Ref campaign is a call to action! In the world of fake news, Wikipedia wants to make its content as accurate as possible. Wikipedia is doing this by making sure its content has references to authoritative and reliable sources and who better to find these sources than Librarians.

It also benefits the State Library to get involved with the #1Lib1Ref campaign. Wikipedia is a starting point for research, it’s the 5th most visited website in the world with 8 billion page views per month. By getting State Library's content referenced and linked in Wikipedia articles we can drive online traffic to engage with our collections via our blogs, catalogue records or digitised content. We can also increase global awareness of Queensland history.

How can you help?

[edit]

Gone are the days where you needed to know HTML to write a Wikipedia page. The new Wikipedia VisualEditor makes it very easy to edit and add links to Wikipedia pages.

During the 2021 #1Lib1Ref campaign (15 May - 5 June) Queensland Memory is running one drop-in Wikipedia editing session per week at The Edge's Multi Media Lab, see dates and times below. If you can't attend one of these session you can book a 2 hour period during the campaign and work from your own workstation or at a workstation within the Queensland Memory team on level 4 to make your edits.

  2. John Oxley Library collections: Find a collection from the John Oxley Library and add a link to the collection in a relevant Wikipedia article.
  3. Citation Hunt: This Citation Hunt tool will provide you a random Wikipedia article with Queensland content that needs referencing. Using the State Library collection find a reliable source to use as a reference for the content in the Wikipedia article.
