[edit]- Why do you want to be a Wikipedia Ambassador?
- (a) To help new, competent editors learn the ropes of Wikipedia in a welcoming environment and to encourage them to stay for the long term.
- (b) Personally, I am looking for ways to be more involved in the Wikipedia project, and this is a good fit.
- In three sentences or less, summarize your involvement with Wikimedia projects.
- In English Wikipedia, more than 75% of my edits are in the article space, meaning I work mainly on content generation. I am also an admin on Malay Wikipedia (since 2007) and a contributor to Wikimedia Commons.
- Please indicate a few articles to which you have made significant content contributions. (e.g. DYK, GA, FA, major revisions/expansions/copyedits).
- My DYKs I especially like are Lolowah bint Faisal Al Saud, Allegiance Council, Sharafuddin of Selangor and For a Few Paintballs More. I also contributed substantially to Karpal Singh and Bersih 2.0 rally which I hope can become good articles in the future.
- How have you been involved with welcoming and helping new users on Wikipedia?
- I haven’t been very involved apart from sending welcome messages to new editors. However, I have helped an expert user unfamiliar with guidelines who got shouted down by other users [1].
- What do you see as the most important ways we could welcome newcomers or help new users become active contributors?
- The most important thing is to emphasize openness and equality among users, old and new. Experienced users must be able to identify well-meaning and competent new users and ensure they always feel welcome.
- Have you had major conflicts with other editors? Blocks or bans? Involvement in arbitration? Feel free to offer context, if necessary.
- I have never been in any heated disputes with editors in good standing. However, I recently had to confront a tendentious editor who eventually got blocked.
- How often do you edit Wikipedia and check in on ongoing discussions? Will you be available regularly for at least two hours per week, in your role as a mentor?
- I read Wikipedia articles and check in on ongoing discussions (on my watchlist) everyday. As for editing, I can be active for months (like now) and then inactive. But I do check in everyday so I will be available almost on a daily basis (more than the 2 hours per week required) for mentees.
- What else should we know about you that is relevant to being a Wikipedia Ambassador?
- Since I am in my senior year of college (in the U.S.), I hope to be able to identify well with the students. I intend to be looked on by students not as a superior but as a peer who is encouraging them to stay in the project for the long term.
