Arduino is based on the Processing programming language which is aimed at visual artists. According to the Processing about page, it was originally designed to be a "software sketchbook" that would teach the "fundamentals of computer programming within a visual context." Hope that helps! Arduino is not based on the Processing language. Arduino is predominantly programmed in C++. However, the most common Arduino programming environment is a derivative of the Processing editor.
