multiprecision arithmetic terminology: "limb"

Code for performing arbitrary-precision arithmetic typically breaks the numbers being worked on into extra-large "digits" of perhaps 32 bits each. I think of such code as working in, say, base 4294967296. I've occasionally seen the jumbo digits referred to as "limbs", although that term is not used anywhere in our article. According to the documentation for GMP (the GNU Multiple Precision Library), "a limb of the human body is analogous to a digit, only larger, and containing several digits". Is this term in anything like widespread use, or is it pretty much unique to GMP? —scs (talk) 12:29, 20 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I do not remember encountering it prior to this question. While I spotted the occasional use that does not directly or indirectly reference GMP, it is not in widespread use. The GMP doc has a timestamp of 8 October 1994. I think it likely the term was coined by GMP's principal author, Torbjörn Granlund. --Lambiam 14:50, 20 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
