Display problem with some letters with caron, but not all of them[edit]

Software problem: In generated PDFs with slavic-language texts, several letters with caron are not displayed, verified for č, ě, ř, and ť, while š and ž are displayed (others remain unchecked as of the moment). While display problems of special characters are an age-old and well-known problem with many possible reasons, the different behavior for different letters with caron seems weird to me. What may be the reason? (Font used in the PDF is Helvetica, with ANSI encoding; behavior seems consistent throughout different PDF readers). --KnightMove (talk) 13:25, 1 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

So, are you making the PDFs? Do you therefore have the Helvetica font file, and can you check to see what glyphs are in it? Can you set a fallback font in the PDF software for displaying special characters not found in Helvetica? Card Zero (talk) 15:13, 1 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Your problem is the ANSI encoding aka codepage 1252 (Western European). It has š and ž but lacks many other common Slavic letters. This was a familiar problem here in the 90's and 00's before most software finally ditched codepages and went to Unicode.
