[edit]Why is thread bumping not allowed in Internet forums?
[edit]I saw users talking about Internet forums not allowing thread bumping.Fernandez0907 (talk) 11:14, 12 September 2023 (UTC)
- Because it is @#%$*#% annoying. "This topic is important to me, therefore I'm going to keep bumping it, despite the fact that nobody else is interested". AndyTheGrump (talk) 11:19, 12 September 2023 (UTC)
- There are two definitions of thread bumping. One is annoying to the readers. The other is annoying to the writers. Andy mentioned the one that is annoying to the readers. A person asks a questions. The readers don't have an answer or don't care or simply don't want to answer. The writer "bumps" it by asking again and again and again on the same thread to keep it at the top of the list of recently edited questions. The other type of thread bumping is when a person has a question and searches. Someone else asked the same question. There are some vague guesses at answers, but no clear answer. So, the person asks for clarification or more info, effectively bumping the thread. Often, the writer doesn't realize that the thread was old and dead until others complain. The complaints make it difficult to get an answer. Someone else might accidentally bump it again because it is obviously highly ranked in search engines. For that reason, some forums auto-close old messages to keep people from accidentally bumping them. 12.116.29.106 (talk) 12:29, 12 September 2023 (UTC)
